So, I'm wondering about the feasibility of having a local co-op for biodiesel production in my area which is a major metro which has already had a couple other co-ops fizzle in the past few years.

Anyone here a member of a successful co-op have some advice?

Dan

I'm down for a co-op. B20 is getting too high round Marietta.

I looked into forming a coop. Too many regulations. The one biodiesel plant we have in the Rochester Area charges the going rate for diesel. Regulations, Road Taxes, Code Requirements, Over the Road permits....all costly and a pain in the butt. NYS is in the process of switching the classification for veg oil from Waste (Same as used motor oil) to Junk. Re-writing regs will take 3 years (according to NYS).

I was advised to get together with a few people close by, conveniently located, share the cost and the work. Ran an add on Craig's List and had two responses in 1 day.

Lots of people out there to share the cost of a good processor or have the know how to build one themselves safely.

Good Luck,
Jim

I have a buddy that was on one. It lasted about 2 years. The biggest problem is that everyone wants cheap fuel, but no one wants to go out collecting oil, pay dues or spend time making fuel. They finally disbanded it because it was more trouble than it was worth. They had a sweet 250 gallon processor that's just sitting out in a field now.

I would love to form or join one. There was a guy here in Southern Nevada that was ready to buy a BioPro 380 and start one but he couldn't secure enough feedstock accounts to get it off the ground. I would be interested in hearing anyone's experience good or bad as well.

I bought in to a coop here in colorado (Denver Biodiesel Coop) that was already formed. It seems that they went through quite a process where they eventually had to outsource the actual blending for zoning reasons, and with the expenses in purchasing high volume equipment it posed a risk to get shut down.
So the big thing is to get the right oil collection agreements and send the oil to a big processor in Kansas or something with a 20 million gallon processing capacity. It comes back ASTM grade and uses 2/3 recycled oil and 1/3 virgin for consistency.
$100 a year and the coop will deliver B100 in 300 gallon totes.
so far is working out really well.

I don't belong to a Co-op, but I buy about a 1000/gal or more per year during the winter because the co-op members don't purchase the fuel when it gets cold in central Illinois. But they keep getting wvo from the cheifs.

Since I have a way to heat it because I also run SVO in my F250 I buy it during the winter months.

This co-op has a great way of getting their wvo because they also supply the cheifs with locally grow foods and the cheifs in turn want to help out and recycle the wvo so they give it to these folks who turn it into bio-diesel.

I pay half of what diesel cost.
