I just recv'd a call from the dealership. and I'm fuming as I type this. I've got a cel with codes 101, 102, and 299. The dealer wants to flash it but wants to charge me $106 for a diagnostic fee. They also want to charge me $106 for the flash itself but will be part of the diagnostic fee. How convenient that they are the same charge. Anyways, I want to make sure that the "fix" they want to do is not the F37 flash. I looked at the TSB page but didn't find one that has the specific code for the f37 flash, only for the tranny and pump info. Does anyone know this flash number? They are faxing me a copy of the flash they want to do and I want to research it before I give them the O.K. Any help would be appreciated.

Flashes are not covered under the powertrain warranty, according to them. Is this true?

Thanks!

If they Flash the TCM - you'll get the F37 - the dealer has no control over the download - they get the latest/greatest from the mainframe.

On flashes, it's a all or nothing deal :? Once hooked to the mother ship it's out of the tech's hands

Do you have any other symptoms other than the codes? Low power? Black smoke?

My thoughts as well, sounds like a burst turbo hose.

Thanks guys. Yes, the symptoms were extreeeeme laaag and then a sudden burst of power, with tons of black smoke at night. Stopping at lights would be an exercise in embarrassment control. After lights would turn green, I would have the vehicle floored, black smoke would be billowing out in huge volumes and I would be barely crawling with people staring at me as they drove by.

I pulled the cac inlet hose off and it looks like there is a small hole where it was chaffing against the airbox. I'm going to do that first tomorrow and see if that fixes it. I was just upset at the dealer because there is no more diagnostic skill involved with what they do anymore. They just pull the codes and see what it matches up with in regards to flashes and they want to implement that instead of thinking logically. Code 299, turbo underboost...maybe there is a leak somewhere. I know, 299 could be caused by a number of problems and I'm just venting because they gave me a hard time when I told them I didn't want any flashes done without contacting me first. I was able to pick it up for the night and me and the service manager(22 yrs old) was able to have a more civilized discussion as to why I didn't want anything done without my consent first. They wanted to flash it with 18-007-40 which had only one of the four symptoms, is 3 yrs old, and was made for vehicles built prior to February 2005. Mine was built 3/05. Needless to say my confidence in them is shot. I just wish i had my own place so that i can tear things apart. My apartment complex has rules against working on your vehicle. I've been changing my oil at Autozone and giving them the oil. Recycling at it's best. Anyway, I've gone off tangent.

This is what I took the Jeep in for:
1. Codes 101, 102, 299
2. overheating, not so much this winter but it started already, especially with the a/c on.
3. possible head gasket leak as there is crusty red fluid draining from somewhere. My low coolant light comes on about once a month.
4. Driver side tire not getting any power in 4-lo

Thanks again for all the input and letting me vent. Hopefully, last update tomorrow.

Yup, yet another turbo hose failure.

Waiting for the Samco hoses. The inlet hose, with a discount, was $168

This sounds like your EGR valve is stuck in the open position. That explains low boost and black smoke.

Have them swap that, no flashes needed.

Lets talk about your over-heating/coolant leak problem for a min.

How many miles you got?
Lets not jump to head gasket failure just yet.
Sure a head gasket failure could cause over-heating but think about what
could have caused the failure.
Has the engine ever severely over-heated?
Even if so, these heads are clamped down really tight and have a super
strong gasket to hold in the high compression. Only under severe conditions
should this head gasket fail.

So the most likely cause of your over-heating/coolant leak is a leaky hose
or loose clamp. This engine has all sorts of little coolant lines running all
over it. Its gonna take some good investigative work to locate the leak.
I recommend pressure testing the cooling system first.

If you go in there saying you have a head gasket leak, they will gladly
replace it for you. They wanna get paid $$$$.

Now, whick drive wheel isn't getting power, front or rear?
I dont think our Liberty's have both front and rear locking differentials.
Without a locking diff, all the power goes to the wheel that slips. Typically
its the passenger rear and the driver front.
There are some driving techniques that will help you avoid this condition
while 4-wheelin.

Maybe someone else will be able be able to explain better how our drive train
engages. I think that at best we have a front diff that locks only in PT-4
and 4-LO. No locking rear. Even in that case there are varying conditions
that can effect full engagment.

FYI - on the coolant leak/overheating - last year I blew the Oil cooler gasket - it's an oil/water cooler on the turbo side of the engine - I was sure I blew a head gasket - with oil in the water - but coolant leaking could happen there also - just one more thing to check.

(try parking over newpaper on the ground - to see if you can identify where the leak is coming from)
