Has anybody here replaced their stock intercooler for an aftermarket one? Im thinking of putting one in with a bit more airflow capability. All comments are welcome.

Cheers

Without some sort of custom ECU tuning a bigger IC won't yield any sort of gains. In fact, a bigger one may even create more turbo lag.

It doesn't even have to be bigger...just more efficient. All Intercoolers of the same size are not created equal.

Ya cain't see it unless you've had a bad front-ender and everything's off for the repairs - bummer...............

Point is, it's not needed until we get some improvements in the ECM and TCM - nobody's messing with larger turbos and increased Boost, and the FoMoCo-blue super-silicone puffer tubes are a long time a'coming - for the same price you can get a manly man's torque convertor and shift kit and hope for someone to come along with programming skills and an available mule to experiment on

Suncoast may be a moot point in Brisbane, tho.................

I wouldn't mind an aftermarket intercooler when the OEM goes bad. At least for big trucks, the best out there is the Duralite.

http://www.duralite.net/charge_air.html

Might be worth checking with them regarding one for the CRD. I know that they have a 7 yr 1,000,000 mile warranty on the big truck versions.

They also have testing kits at the site. I would be willing to bet that more than a few intercoolers on the CRD's out there would fail the pressure test. Sure takes a bite on the MPG's and puts an excessive strain on the turbo to keep up pressure.

Different Intercoolers will be more efficient than others...less pressure drop and lower temps. Even without changing anything else, they can make a bit of a difference.

I thought the intercooler/CAC was built into the radiator?! We are sure it's 2 separate parts? While on the subject, is there any way to test or prove the electric fan in front of the radiator works? I doubt it would throw a code?!

Last winter I drove through a snow drift and snow was comming over the hood, then and was below freezing for a couple days I dunno if it would have been damaged? Never have any overheat problems, but never caught it running either.

The transmission cooler is built into the A/C condenser. Then the intercooler is sandwiched in between that and the radiator. It's a separate unit.

Try sitting in traffic on a hot day with the A/C on. That should make the electric fan come on.

Upon closer inspection the stock intercooler on the Jeep is HUGE! Id say around the 600x400x65 mark which is massive for a factory intercooler. Does anyone have any flow/pressure test results?

Our intercooler is ridiculously large and will more than handle any mods which the 2.8 is capable of handling without blowing up.

When we were looking for a place to put an extra trans cooler I was under there looking around. As others have said the innercooler is very large in size. You cant get anything bigger height and widthwise. There are about three inches of air space between the innercooler and the radiator behind it. You could put something a bit deeper in there and it would fit, but I don't think it would be worth the effort.

Just unplug the EGR-- it lowers the intake temps and gives more time on boost. If you are spending lots of time at idle maybe wedging a fan inbetween the radiator and the cooler would help pull more air through? Don't know.

The ait temps without the EGR usually read about 20 or so more than the temp outside. With it on I think it was about 40-50 degrees warmer. That already seems pretty good. Other than a water-cooled innercooler I can't see improving that any more.

You guys with SGII can check your MAP numbers, subtracting Baro, for Boost levels - iirc, Boost was way higher than on my CTD, and I've got it jacked - the charge-air cooler on the KJ is larger than what is currently needed - what we need is a good tune in the ECM and some tighten-up in the TCM in order to take full advantage of it - you can compare AIT from low to full Boost to determine when a larger a\a heat exchanger is needed - should always remain below 150degF (good for fuel economy), usually ~10-20deg above ambient - remember: you could put the c\a cooler from the Titanic on the KJ, and IAT's would still be high when you're burning the air conditioning - IAT /\ across the c\a-c is only as great as the lowest temperature of the air flowing thru the fins - /\IAT and Boost and /\EGT guages rule!!
