9000 Mile Road Trip

My girlfriend and I are leaving on May 6 for a two month road trip cross country in the Jeep. We were looking for any suggestions of places to visit along the way. We are leaving from Ohio and going across Colorado, Utah, Nevada, California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan. We will have a computer with us so I will be checking the forum for any ideas you all send our way.

I would have other people let you know the best way through the other states.... but I have found that this is THE scenic route through Colorado...

1. Rocky Mountain National Park
2. Take the 70 to Glenwood Springs
3. Take the 82-133 through Paonia to Hotchkiss
4. Take the 92 to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison
5. Take 50 to Montrose
6. Take 550 to Ouray and at least do the Alpine Loop (have to stay here for a day or two)
7. Take 550 to Durango and take the train round-trip to Silverton
8. Take 160 to Mesa Verde National Parka and see the Anasazi Cliff Dwellings
9. Take the 491 and 191 to Monticello and Moab

Then have someone from Utah tell you where to go :lol:

PS... I live in Durango so if you guys make it this way I can show you around this area.... at least where to eat

If your coming down Interstate 80 stop in Elko NV go south on hwy 227 to Lamoile In the Ruby Mountains. Jeep Jamboore 2008 will be in the Ruby Mtns. July 11-13. Also try to see Lake Tahoe. Give a shout when you pass thur Nevada.

When are you coming to Minnesota, and where in? I might be able to help with sights, and interesting things to see.

Ohh yeah, and stay away from Iowa. :shock:

I spent 6 years on the road living in a motorhome and the best advice I can give you is STAY OFF THE INTERSTATES. If you want to see this country 2 lanes is the way to see it.

Could you post a screen shot of your planned route with Google Maps? The western states are BIG, and depending on which way you go, will decide what attractions you can see.

Here are my favorite places:

1. Yosemite National Park
2. Bryce Canyon National Park
3. Crater Lake Oregon
4. Rocky Mountain Nation Park
5. Yellowstone National Park

Envy you with a trip like this coming up! I wiuld have a hard time thinking where all I would want to see. Like Fulltimer stated take the back roads, drive slow, keep the windows open and enjoy! Keep us posted on here with lots of pictures! I could wonder through Colorado, Wyoming and Montana for the rest of my life and never be bored!

Lucky you! I've got a cross country trip coming up here soon (North Carolina to Washington) but I have to be in Washington in a couple days but it'll be fun seeing the country. Washington is home and after a month home I'm going to souther california and I'm pretty sure I'm going to leave a day or two sooner than I have too and drive the scenic route along the coast.

I'll say it again, Sir Sam, those are some outstanding pictures.

I also have road-trip envy, because it's been a few years now with no real mileage under my floorboards. This September, though, this may change....some friends have asked me to drive north with them, up a fantabulous highway I've not yet seen. I'm getting the travel bug from this topic....

The wife and I may be driving from here in Reno, to St. Louis or Chicago. Not sure which to end up in yet. Not sure if it will even happen actually. But we have a family reunion back east so we thought why not take an extra week or so and see some sights.

Your trip sounds fun. I agree with Richrail: see the Ruby Mts. near Elko NV. I hunt every other year over there in those mountains and it is awesome. I am in Reno, so drop a line on here and let us know if you are passing through. We'll hit a few trails if it works out.

I also love northern Idaho. I went elk hunting up there 3 years ago and it was awesome.

Bunch of buddies live in Utah too. Great wheeling as everyone knows.

See some natural hot springs in Oregon, just watch out for big naked hippies that will be taking a dip in the geothermal pools. :shock:

Portland is a beautiful city as well, and the Colombia River Gorge is a sight to behold. Tons of waterfalls.

Seattle is another must see city, really clean. Not sure about any wheeling opportunities but the city is cool.

As for the rest, I am ashamed to say I have only driven through and never spent any time other than bathroom and fuel breaks. Have fun and keep us updated.

Already planning on going to all of those they look like a lot of fun. I will see if I can get a map up.

Hadn't heard anything about that area. but you can;t go wrong with too much west of the Cascades here.
