Long time no speak, I know. But I'm still here!

Last night while in NJ, I decided to fill up for some "cheap" gas. I only needed 1/2 a tank, but at 3.60 v. my local 4.00, I went for it. Well, the attendant wasn't right there and the pump failed to auto-shut off. Gas flooded out, onto the Jeep and floor!

After yelling at the guy and making him splash some soapy water on the fender, I started the Jeep and left. I noticed it started to hesitate as I pulled away from the pump. About 200 feet away, the CEL came on. I immediately pulled over to check the gas cap but it was tight. It ran fine on the highway, so I completed my 100 mile trip with the CEL on. I figured with that much fuel in there, the system had no room for expansion, or maybe gas got into a vent tube. I hoped the CEL might clear itself once the tank was off full. No such luck.

Last night and this morning, I noticed an off-idle stumble. Other than that, it runs perfectly fine.

Any thoughts?

had that problem with the work truck. pulled off the cap and put it back on. no problem after that, guess it was just the amount of pressure in the tank/lines.

Vent tube plugged up?

I can't remember if there was an overflow can where access gas was put in the event of a situation like this. Man, I hate having such a horrible memory

I was out at lunch driving around. It's intermittant. Sometimes smooth as silk. Other times rough idle and stumble as I accel from stop gently. Feels like a coil pack going. Just seems REALLY odd that it happened instantly after gas spill. Also, I was away for 10 days where the Jeep sat unused.

I'll bring it to mechanic to have the codes read.

I have two trips planned with the kids this year. Jeep Jamboree's in Vermont and Catskills. But I'm still toying with the idea of selling the Jeep, even though my son wants to kill me for even thinkign about it. We'll see.

Is there a vent tube there? A fuel system vent tube? That would make the most sense. Moisture in the gas wouldn't be so immediate. I mean, the Jeep started to sputter before I left the pump! the CEL came on as I left the gas station. Even if you put gas into a diesel, you'd get further than that just by using the fuel in the lines.

Or, it's a coinky dink and my coil(s) is/are shot.

See ya on the trails.

You may have gotten some liquid gas in the vapor system and is playing h$ll with your system.Give it a few days and it should clear itself, then get the code cleared.

that's what I was thinking. Other than coincidence of a coil pack failing at the same time as the overfill, it's the only thing that makes sense. But where is there a vent? I don't see one near the fill cap.

The vent is in the gas tank and is directly tied into the vapor system that traps the gas vapors and stores them in the vapor canistor, when at a certian point it pushes the gas vapors stores in the vapor canister(filled with charcol) into the intake. The vapor system does not like liquid gas,can play havac with the soliniod, purge pump, and other parts of the sytem.

But it may be a coincidence that a coil pack went, seen weirdier things happen before.

If i remember corrctly, in NJ you are not allowed to pump your own gas, correct?

Have you removed the gas cap and re-placed it yet> make sure that it is threaded corrctly. After yelling at the attendant he migh have said Screw you and crossed the threads. It may feel tight and click but not on correctly and that will throw a CEL and a code.

I had my mechanic read the codes. #2 misfire. The engine started running really rough so I had to cancel an appointment and run over there. He cleared the code (it's back on of course) and I went and bought a new coil pack and new plugs (old ones had 20k on them).

I'll replace the coil pack and all plugs this evening. Hopefully that'll do it. I just need to get it done before my kids swim practice  No pressure.

So unless the #2 cylinder is NOT the front passenger side, then I just changed a coil for nothing. With all new plugs and one new coil, it's just as bad as ever. The CEL is flashing and limiting RPM's to 3,000

Now what? The code it threw was misfire #2. I don't have a scan tool, my mechanic scanned it with me standing beside him. He agree it was likely coil and I left to go change it myself. But if that's not it, NOW WHAT!?

have you tried just switching coils from one side to the other, ( say front right with front left ) and possibly trying to determine which it may be? Just a thought...

obd said 'misfire #2'. I changed front passenger side coil. that's #2 per shop manual.
still same symptoms. I'll check for spark and power at each cylinder per shop manual. now what? remember this started at same time as fillup overfill. and yes, gas cap is on correctly.

should be but thats why I thought if you switched it and then it went to the other side, it maybe a bad coil, but if it stayed on #2 it may be another problem

You can pull the codes from the liberty using the key trick. Do you know what the key trick is?

I DID NOT KNOW THAT! Sweet! I'll read the thread. But tell me, can I clear the code out myself if I fix the problem?
