I was going to replace the fluid in my manual transmission when I discovered I do not have the correct size Allan key socket. The biggest I have is are either a 10mm or 3/8 and neither is big enough. I have looked through the Jeep manual, searched LOST and even tried Wikipedia. No luck.

Could somebody please let me know what size(s) allan key will fit the fill and drain plugs are for the manual transmission.

Thanks.

17 mm for either the fill or the drain. they may be different. but alot of the drain and the fills are the same 17mm.

Did the 17 work for both the drain and fill? I hope so, because for my '06 370 manual the drain and fill plug were different. I think that the fill plug was a 15, but I don't remember for sure. Just be sure to remove the fill plug first....

I have not had a chance to find out yet. Nobody here in British Columbia seems to carry a 17mm hex head socket. Sears Canada carries maybe 20% of what Sears USA carries and they do not carry this size. They also will not ship up to Canada for any reason.

I have found it on Snap on Tools website for $42. I have two more places to check tomorrow and if I cannot find it through them, I will be calling Snap on.

I am really hoping that it is 17mm for both, or this is going to be expensive. The dealer charges $100 to change transmission fluid and put in Mopar fluid, they charge $125 +/- if you put in synthetic. This is a 20 minute job at best and I am using synthetic. The sockets may make the first fluid change a break even job.

Good thing I really like working on my jeep.

I got a 13, 15, and 17 socket in a package that had all three from autozone for around $10.00 or $12.00 if I remember correctly. Maybe you could go online and check availability and shipping to Canada. If I get a chance this weekend I will crawl under and see what it takes for the fill plug....

I think Khaki's looking for a socket with a hex driver head.

Is this the thing you're looking for, Khaki? If you click the "shipping from warehouses across the U.S. " link, it says at the bottom that they'll ship to Canada. Dunno what that costs.

EDIT: Just realized the link I posted was for an impact socket. But the same site has a 17 mm hex key (allen wrench) for 12 bucks. Not a socket but it'd do the trick. Here's the link:

I checked the autozone web sight and it said:

call (800)288-6966 to order.

Good luck!!

I am referring to the hex socket as well, not a regular socket...

O.K. so I crawled under, and it takes a 14mm hex for the fill plug (NOT 15mm)- and 17mm for the drain plug(this is '06 and newer 6 speeds-at least mine is this way.) I paid $9.99 for a 12mm, 14mm, and a 17mm hex socket package at autozone. Here is a previous post of mine that may be of some help:

Good Luck!!

I was able to track down both the 17 and 14mm hex head sockets for $10 each. I can pick them up later today or tomorrow, so it looks like I can get this done this weekend.

Thanks for the all the help and the links everybody.

Same idea, but the end of the Allan key is attatched to a socket. Here is what the Hex Head Socket looks like;

Good luck Khaki, I hope it goes well, and I hope your drain plug isn't on as tight as mine was!!
Keep us posted as to how it goes....

If I can track down a digital camera I may be able to turn this into a tech section post. It is a really simple job once you have the two hex / allan head sockets. 20 minutes and it is over.

Dealers up here are quoting $25 labour to change the fluid and $40 for synthetic 5w30 synchromesh fluid. No way I am paying that. I would much rather put the money into the Jeep and go out and play.
