I have had a squeal from my manual transmission since I bought it new. It goes away if I put just the slightest amount of pressure on the clutch pedal, when I am increasing or decreasing speed or when I am shifting.

It seems to be there only if I am not putting any load on on the engine. If I am in 4th gear or higher, just coasting down a street it is there, if I give the engine a little gas, or just lightly press on the clutch pedal, it goes away.

The only way I can describe it sound is it sounds like a high pitched whistle and since I like driving with the windows down, I would like to figure out what this is.

I changed the transmiision fluid last night after 20,000 kilometers and the magnet had a fair amount of metal particles or small filings on it. The fluid looked really clean. I am hoping the filings are from me re-learning how to drive a manual again.

It might just be inherent with that tranny-and no big deal. Mine makes the same noise. , but is barely audible. Did the change of fluid help? Did you go with the factory synchromesh, or a full synthetic? The synchromesh is really good stuff from what I have read from people with other vehicles who really like it. The penzoil synchromesh is supposedly the same as factory fill. I put in a full syn, and it really likes it. The amsoil or redline would probably give good results too. Part of what I am thinking is that the fluid is pretty thin (same as 5w30 motor oil), and therefore would give more noise and vibration, where as a heavier fluid might mask it more through dampening. (I still would stick with a synchromesh regardless of noise).

I went with the Amsoil Synchromesh 5W30. After a few miles, the pitch may have changed a bit. You may be right about the viscosity having some bearing on the sound. I like the Amsoil better than the stock fluid, it sure feels like it is shifting better and it seems to coast easier. I will try to get it out and do a long distance drive this week and see if that changes anything.

What size tool do you need to check the manual trans? Its a hex thing right? I've been meaning to do mine.

You need two allan key sockets, a 17mm for the drain plug and a 14mm for fill plug. Both are torqued down to 22 foot pounds.
