OK, So I currently have the Yokohama Geolander HT/s and while they are good on the highway and good off road they do however take a beating and I leave chunks behind on trails :D

The size I am running right now, which is with a stock suspension is 245/70/16. I want them to work good on trails/highway and in the occassional rain storm here in Las Vegas. To give you an idea of the trails I do I have included a pic. These Geolanders have only lasted about 30K and I would say about 90% of that is highway, however we are doing more and more trails for our geocaching addiction :)

I am debating a few different tires but before I say anything I want to hear what you say first.

Here is another one from a few weeks prior.

If that is about all you are doing as far as off roading then just pick about any tire you like and in your budget
I saw nothing "demanding" in those pics

now post a pic like this and I would sing a different song
note the large root that will soon dig hard into the side wall
any thing less than a bias ply tire would have died here ,I was fine

Having lived and wheeled in Vegas for 3 years or so, I know those trails can eat up chunks of your tires. I would suggest the BFG KO all terrains, not aggressive, but still handle the trails you showed in the pics with ease. You'll get more than 30,000 out of them for sure and they are a good road tire and decent off road tire. I love my Swamper Trxus tires, but they look to be a bit overkill from what I see you might want or need. MTRs are overrated, BFG MT are too. Toyo MTs are REALLY soft, not going to last on highway. I hear the D i c k Cepek ATs are really good hiighway ATs and they look to be ok for some mild off roading. There, a few tires for you to sift through.

I was checking out the BFG KOs and was wondering if they would be good for our trails. I also hit a few trails that look like the one in your avatar Mike. I would say the worse road/trail I have been on thus far is the one in the back of Red Rock. It gets washed out each year and when you go back there you have to build ramps with rock otherwise you will never make it. My Grand that I had got hung up a few times back there. Hell at one point it was a teetertootering which was a blast...thank god it was a lease, lol.

Also since this weekend we are hitting a few more caches I will post some pics of those trails. I will take my camera this time and not just the wifes. She keeps hers in the case mostly to protect it from dust.

I have been on that trail behind red rock in my kj and in my dad's old zj. Fun trail and yes it can be kind of sketchy in some spots. I still think the BFGs would do you fine, but if you plan on getting progressively braver with your kj, like doing more trails like the red rock one but harder, then you might consider a more aggressive tire. My buddy with an XJ uses the BFG AT and he thrashed the crap out of them running some trails like the red rock one along with some more difficult trips to Moab. He wore those out and got some more because he really liked them though. So, I would say the BFG would be good, but if you ended up wanting to put the kj to the test, go with a heavier duty off road tire. My buddy with the xj did tear some chunks out of his BFGs, but he drives way faster on rocky dirt trails than he should.

LOL. You know last night after I made the last post my wife walked over and just rolled her eyes and said, wth, why did you post those pics. They are the most lame ones we have! LOL. However, they are the only ones I have on photobucket and since I was at work, that was all I had access too :)

Mike, since you have hit various trails around the valley, which ones would you suggest are good enough to "test" my kj :D

Well, it has been a while since I lived there. I lived in Summerlin so I would wheel all over the west side of the valley. I would drive to the top of lake mead and the road would end and there were endless trails back there. This was before 215 was ever created and there was way less people and houses down there. I used to wheel some near the valley of fire, and some down by the dam. I never knew any of the trails' names that I took though. If I remember there are some good trails out by Mt. Charleston too. Sorry I'm not more specific, it has been a while.

Yes which ones are good in the area? I can't wait to get out there and do some exploring! Is there any good info on the Vegas area on the web? I travel to communication towers all over the area, but I have not been on any "trails".

As far as tires, we have started running the BFG AT's on our company trucks. The first set we put on I saw the other day and they were wasted. I was getting on the guys butt when he told that they had 45,000 miles on them (4 months). The kid is hard on them so I was actually very happy with 45,000. We travel up to mountain tops all over the Western US as well as city driving. They seem like a good all around tire so far.

I'll have to get you guys some info from my buddy that just moved from Vegas. He used to run a ton of trails and they should all be fresh in his memory. I'll email him today.

Ok, my buddy replied tonight and here is what he said:

"The only other trails that I have been on are the Logandale trails (lots of dirt bikes four wheelers out there and a little bit of rockcrawling.) About 45 min north on I15. The other one is the trails by the old gypsum mine south west of Durango and Warm Springs. There is an awsome trail back there that you have to go back around the mountain to get to, but it's a dry creek bed and it is gnarly. I went on it with my buddy Tom with the Rodeo on 33's and a guy named Jason with a 4Runner with 35's both locked on both ends and they both got a little bit of damage. We never made it to the end of the trail because it got to dark. But that is probably the best trail for the hard core guys. Then there is the Potato ridge or Rocky Gap trail that most guys know about there, right by the Red Rock National Park. I can thumb tack all these trails on Google Earth when I get my computer at home up and running again."

I will post what he sends me from google earth. The one heavy duty trail sounds fun, never heard of it myself, but I am down in Vegas pretty much every year so I'll have to et you guys know when I am and we can hit up some trails. :D

The old gypsum mine trail doesn't sound like a trail that my Libby would ever see! lol
