Sometimes at idle I see the tach rev up and down by itself. I know my starter is going out, going to change that soon, got the part. I also have a P0442 and P0455 (large and small evap leak), don't know where its coming from, yes I changed the gas cap. Been on for months. The only thing I can think of is when I last change my oil, I used a Fram Tough Guard filter, instead of the usual Wix (Napa Gold) or Purolator One. Also I've been loosing a little coolant, have to top it off once a month. Can't find the source of the leak. My oil is not milky, so its not a head gasket.

Also, my mileage is decent at 16-17 city/19-ish hwy.

Check the vacuum hoses near the gas tank for your vac leak.

rough idle...I have one too, but I think it may be linked to my transmission issue since it doesn't do it in Park

Now that you mention it...I haven't noticed a rough idle in Park, only when it is in gear. Concerning the vacuum leak, I have checked all the hoses, haven't noticed any cracks.

Your EVAP leaks and your lose of coolant are most likely your rough idle cause.Check your EVAP hoses,purge solinoid,EVAP tank,and test pump for any leaks or cracked hoses.

Your coolant leak is going somewhere,it doesn't evaporate in a sealed system.Time for some tests like a compression test,leak down test,and cooling system test to start.You may have a bad headgasket or cracked head.Basically you may be burning the coolant from a leaking headgasket or cracked head.

The oil filter has nothing to do with it.When is the last time you changed the plugs or the PCV valve?

Including the ones by the tank?

specifically:

TJKJ, spark plugs were changed about 5K miles ago. PCV valve was changed about 12K miles ago. Hopefully, its not a cracked head or head gasket. Is there a way to do these tests at home?

Thunderbird, I take a look at those hoses tommorow, its dark out now.

Sure if you go buy the tools to do the tests,your looking at a couple of hundred dollars for decent test set to do compression,leak down(not mention needing a air compressor),and cooling system pressure tests.

For a cheaper way you can get some coolant dye and add it to your cooling system and run for a day or so,may take a week,and then check your oil for traces of the dye and check your exhaust pipe for the dye with a UV light.

Troy...since you're smart...and I have no desire to learn the inner workings of an automatic transmission, you care to tell me if there's any truth to this?

The "chrysler click" (sounds like a Ford starter solenoid clicking rapidly with a nearly dead battery) before the transmission engages is the 1-3 transmission cluster on its last legs. This is what a guy I know and respect told me...and I'm doing 6 days this week, so no time to drop it off at the trans shop.

Your input, since I don't feel like starting a new thread? Would this have anything to do with my rough idle in gear? Will getting rid of this issue make me more attractive to women?

That rapid clicking you hear when you shift into "D" or "R" is 100% normal on a KJ,or any newer electronically controlled Chrysler tranny.It is the shift solinoids cycling to insure proper operation for the command sent.

Mine has had that noise from the day I bought it with 3 miles on the odometer,my '01 Grand did it with the 42RLE.It just seems to be more noticeable in the KJ for some reason,really noisy if you got the 45RFE.So if by happen chance it is something in the tranny going out it sure is taking it's time to die in my 45RFE,geez you'd think after 6 years and 64,000miles it would have finally given up and died .

well...mine's only been doing it for the last 2 or 3k miles...and the last 3 KJs I've driven (including a fellow LOSTer's '04 with a 42RLE) didn't do it, so it kinda freaked me out. Got 112k on it...yeesh
