Back on July 14th when I left out for TX, lowest I could find along the way was 4.72. When I started back on July 31st, lowest along the route was 4.42. Yesterday, station closest to the house here in NC lowered their price to 4.29 - back on Monday it was 4.49.

On this trip to TX, I took the '87 MB. Averaged 34 and change per tank - I was hitting the same fueling stops as with the CRD but with a 2 gallon smaller tank, and the A/C running full blast all the time. Not bad for an old mechanically injected 4 speed non-lockup slushbox that was cranking 2800 rpm at 70 mph.

And with the quality of the ride and the seats, I didn't feel as if I'd been rode hard and put up wet at the end of the day - I was pulling over to take a break because I wanted to, not because I felt like I HAD to. A/C worked remarkably well too - 50 F out of the vents on a 104 F day and engine temp stayed at the lower end of the band.

Bloody good car!! :D

Some have done that here, too.

On my street (~8 houses) there once was 2 4wd cars, my KJ and some korean hyuindailalalai (sp? ;)). Now there's two small cars getting 50+MPG instead of the 4wds.

Times change I guess. We both had those 4wds because we thought they were nice to have. People who own 4wds now are in the "need to have" range of business. Obviously there's still the odd bugger who's got enough money to not care what he drives though ;)

I wish I was one of those with enough money to care less. I had a heart fludder yesterday when I filled the tank on the wifes car and it set me back $75 and some change.

There was an interesting analysis of what is going re: fuel prices on NPR's Marketplace business show last week. The argument is that the dollar gained value slightly against the Euro (it was taking $1.60 to buy a 1 Euro, it dropped to $1.50 to buy a Euro). At the same time, China all but shuts down polluting industry and personal car driving around Beijing to avoid killing olympic athletes with pollution.

As a result, commodities traders who had been running up the price of all sorts of things, from oil to gold to platinum, took a step back and said "hmm, maybe the dollar isn't such a losing investment after all, and maybe oil isn't magic." As a result several billion dollars in oil commodity investment got swapped back into foreign exchange trading and and US T-notes. Oil prices drop, fuel prices drop.

I don't necessarily buy the entire argument, but it was an interesting insight to how the system works today.

Wait wait wait....

So what they were actually saying (in part) is that trading activity CAN have a direct and short-term effect on the prices at the pump?

You mean to tell me that Faux Snooze, the oil barons, and the GWB White House mouthpieces that were blaming all the instant-speed run-ups on "China Growth" and "India Demand" might have really been just shilling for the energy trading groups?

Could these be the same types of trade actions that our good buddies in Enron managed to GIFT the marketplace with, by removing levels of oversight and the requirement that "Energy traders must eventually TAKE DELIVERY of the traded commodity"?

Wow... My faith in the "Business will naturally do what is right without regulation" argument has been seriously shaken now. You have ruined my innocence. I'm weeping for the sad new reality that has been opened to me.

BTW: In case your screen isn't dripping with all my sarcasm yet... YES, all of that was sarcastic.

Yep, now I just have to decide which of 3 bloody jobs to take!

Went down to TX job hunting after Freightliner laid us off back in June. In 2 months, not a nibble in NC. 2 weeks in Texas, I get 4 different job offers. Go figure.

Got it down to two in Texas - offer to be a QA Inspector with a small aerospace machine company in LaGrange, but 150 mile round trip each day - and another offer from HEB to do maintenance in one of their distribution warehouses 15 miles from where my friends live.

And when I get home, here's a certified letter from Freightliner recalling 2nd shift and wanting me back at work in the 18th.

All I have to do now is learn to read tea leaves so I can figure out which job has the best long-term prospects. :?

If it were me I would stay in VA, it the bird in the hand thing and you have longevity to think about and the cost of the move.

Back to diesel prices there is a Conoco in Norman, OK with 3.779 ulsd, here in Tulsa the lowest is 4.039. In Oklahoma City there are many places with 3.999 or less.

ULSD is down to $4.03 here in South Dakota.

Oddly, though, our Bio is going up.
I had been buying B100 at a local mom and pop store and I stopped there just 2 days ago to fill up.
B100 was $4.49 - which is where they had it all summer.
This was 20 cents cheaper than regular diesel just a few weeks ago, but not any more.
I asked the gal that owns the place why it hadn't come down to match the regular diesel.

She said that they had contracted for the bio months before summer started and had locked in at the $4.49 price.
This batch was the last batch they had at that contract price and if they wanted to buy any more that the price would be about $1 higher per gallon!!
Needless to say, she told their suppliers that they would not be taking any more deliveries this year.

Cheapest in Georgia right now is in Warner Robins at $3.89 and the cheapest anywhere close to the Atlanta metro area is $4.04 in Newnan, south of the city.

The highest reported price in Georgia today is in Athens (home of the University of Georgia) at $4.75/gal. Go figure.

I've seen a Citgo at 4.15 and an independent at 4.13. Shell stations, stations right off the interstate, and in the well-to-do areas around the lake are still kicking up around 4.40 to 4.50.

Enjoy the small modicum of price relief while it lasts. OPEC is already talking production cuts. Having tasted the profits from $145/barrel oil, $4 gas, and $5 diesel, there are factions out there who can't wait to see the prices go soaring again for whatever reason or excuse.

And while the drop in diesel right now might be giving us a small sigh of relief at the pump, $4 diesel pretty much means $4 home heating oil as well - it's gonna be a long hard cold winter for a lot of folks.

The lower the price drops now, the less pressure there will be on our elected representatives to finally do anything meaningful, either before or after the election, towards anything resembling a comprehensive energy policy. In a way, we've already gotten their answer - when prices were at their height, they decided to go on vacation.

I agree with the above comment, but not all of them went on vacation. Some of them sat in a darkened room and protested. Not saying that it will do anything, but thought it warranted mentioning (since I don't see the reports on most major new stations).

Back to pump prices: I filled up in the VA mountains yesterday. $3.94/gallon at a BP near Warm Springs. 19.72 gallons in the mighty little tractor. The low fuel light was blaring away for 40+ miles over rolling east-coast mountains until I found the little oasis with "low" price.

I'm jealous of a lot of you guys...up here in mid-Michigan, diesel is still about $4.50-$4.60 per gallon. It's amazing how much prices can be wildly different in various parts of the country. I think the taxes here are a little higher in other states, but not by that much.
