Did you have the timing gears and/or the water pump changed while they were in there?
Was there any other miscellaneous items they suggested to be changed with the job (tensioner, idler, etc.)?

That's a good question. So far I've done this job twice on my TDI and each time I've replaced the water pump, tensioner and idlers along with the belt. When VW went to the 100K mile belt interval they beefed up the main idler considerably. Even so for the VW ALH engine at least it's pretty standard practice to replace all these parts when doing this job. One would hope that a diesel engine of supposedly commercial grade would not require this. That question aside not having a water pump available in the US is troubling.

That is the first time the MAF has been plugged in since it fell out 80,000 miles ago. Amazingly, the EGR worked and it was not clogged up. I quickly unplugged it. ;)

That's good info to know. This was one of the unknown values of longterm ORM exposure. 8)

FYI, It's not the lifters, but the rocker arms. The manual says they're made to break when the valves come in contact with the piston if the timing belt should fail. Sounds like it would save the valve(s) from severe bending and damaging the engine (pistons/head) really bad.

I don't think I would like to be the first one to try this feature out though. If anyone has good/bad luck with this, be sure to let us all know.

Well I was close, it's been a while.

Unless there has been a very recent change, 2.8L waterpumps are special order, and there are none available in America or forthcoming - dealer-estimated date of availability = unknown

No water pumps available or forthcoming? Jeez! They either have an irrational confidence in their water pumps being bulletproof, or an irrational lack of regard for customers . . . oh, wait, we're talking about Chrysler here, aren't we?

Timing belt? I was told it had gears that would NEVER have to be replaced for the life of the engine.

I did NOT buy my CRD from that dealer, I never liked there sales guys/woman anyhow. They had more BS than any dealer I had ever been too.

Where I did buy my CRD I was told it had a belt that would need serviced at 100k miles.

Luckily, the CRD engine is alive and well all over Europe.

We'd have to source one from over there, and it won't be cheap, but replacing it every 100,000 miles when you do the timing belt won't be all that bad.

By the time have 100,000 miles on my Jeep, it will be more than paid for, so not having a car payment will go a long way toward maintenance.

If planning ahead to a belt change, it seems the DC parts network ought to be able to get any part given enough time.

I wonder if the water pump is typically replaced on this series of engine elsewhere in the world when the timing belt is serviced?

I'm at 98,000 miles, so I started to look into the timing belt replacement. Called the dealer and they quoted me $360 labor, belt price $186, water pump price $201, so its a total of around $750. They said their parts data base shows 6 water pumps available.

$750 is not too bad.

I know a few people who've paid over $1000 for a timing belt job.

well at least one dealership can find water pumps. I asked the stealership I deal with if they could get a water pump and they said it was on back order. I would hate to be someone with a leaking water pump.

I'm sure there are plenty of water pumps. The engine is still in use all over the world. Dealer just has to order one.

I swear, sometimes I think if a dealer doesn't want to fool with something, they just say "The part is on backorder".
