Hi, I`m an idiot :)

I`m due for inspectiong in a few months and i jumped ahead and took the butterfly and blocked the egr tube...
Now of course i have a cel ...

what would the VA inspection station do to the jeep ? (not safety but emitions iguess) would they care about the cel ? since is a diesel, would they plug an odb2 reader into it ?

I did buy an SEGR box, but i have yet to build it (i know, read line 1 of my post).

btw, would they witch if i have a straight pipe and no muffler ?

Thanks :)

No idea but since I will be there in a few weeks and the Jeep will be there in November, I will watch this post closely.

They just started doing emissions for diesels. ug. All they do (from what I've seen) is plug into the OBD II port and read the codes to verify emissions. However, IIRC the CEL will be an immediate fail. I need to get mine done this weekend and will let you know how it goes and I'll pay closer attention.

No, it's a soldered in LED on a printed circuit board.

You would need to cut a trace on the board to turn it off, and then repair it again if you wanted the light to function correctly (not a real good option).

Sounds like it's time for an SEGR install.

Besides the CEL there's something called a "readyness" code. After a CEL is cleared you must drive a certain number of trips in a certain manner to set the rediness bit

build segr, get it installed. Clear all codes at autozone. Drive a couple days and get emissions. Otherwise you will be doing exactly that after the failed emissions...

Massachusetts is switching to an inspection system that simply works off the onboard diagnostics. So, a CEL means immediate failure. However, since certain codes can be present without setting a CEL, there is a little lack of clarity as to how it is going to work, case by case, in practice.

Joe is right about "readiness" codes. Last year, I put the stock ECU back in my '99 Passat, cleared the "power interruption" code with VAGCOM, headed for inspection and promptly failed. It took about 3 days and multiple "drive cycles" before the "readiness" codes (things like evaporative emissions, etc.) cleared up.

I'm waiting to see if, with "light duty" diesels, they are going to include some sort "flash" test to check for smoke volume out the tailpipe. A cleaned out CAT appears to lead to inceased smoke output with InMotion Stage II ECU. Haven't had a chance yet to put the stock ECU back in and get a feel for smoke output in that configuration. So, there may be an adventure ahead in December when the CRD is up for annual inspection again.

I didn't get the emissions done, but did ask the question. The guy told me he believed it was for diesels over 8500lbs. And if they did make you do emissions it would just be via the OBD II port. And yes, CEL is instant fail. As long as you don't have that, you'll pass.

AND (at least here in AZ), they read you VIN number back when the do the test through the OBD connector. This means that if you are running two computers, you will need to have the VIN the same in both or at least in the one they check.
