That's about what I figured.

that extra $31k can buy you a Hemi Challenger if you REALLY REALLY must have a Hemi.

Yeah, don't get me wrong, I'd take one, but paying that much more on top of the cost of a new jeep already is a terrible idea I think. IMO AEV does the best custom 4x4 work out there, but they charge a small fortune. If I had the money I would still pay for a BRUTE in a second though. Wouldn't think twice.

It's only like $48,000 for the Viper V-10 swap, though upgraded axles(D60's) and driveshafts are highly recommended and Burnsville Offroad.

Speaking of TJ's, of the few owner's I've met, they all claim Jeep's swap to a V-6 in the JK was a mistake. And although I am not seriously considering an engine swap, I think if my 3.7 ever blows up, a Jeep inline 6 would be a good alternative.

It isn't that the V6 is a bad engine, it is just the I6 was near perfect. Why mess with perfection?

I have never tried looking at it from that perspective... never will.

The ol' reliable leak-tastic 4.0 got the same fuel economy in a lighter, taller geared vehicle as the KJ gets with a 3.7 V6 and they both perform about the same on pavement. the 4.0 has a little more seat-o-the-pants off-idle torque...but that may be due to vehicle weight.

IMO the 4.0 sucks, and I'm glad it's gone. My only gripe with Jeeps with the 3.8 minivan motor is it didn't happen in '02 with the KJ.

Too bad they don't have the 4.0 V6 based off the 3.5 like the Nitro R/T available for the Liberty. 260 HP and 265 lb-ft torque wouldn't be too bad from a stock V6. Isn't that the one that rumors were floating around about being a V6 Hemi before it came out?

i've driven a charger with the 3.5L....it's a pretty impressive engine, able to get rubber on a straight line take off with the autostick.....i can only image what the 4.0L v-6 would be like.

Yeah but the 3.7 isn't bullet-proof as the inline 6 was.

Oh and as for a big motor, I'd prefer the LS7 in the ZR1 Corvette. With v10, the only thing you would remember would be my taillights.

Proof?

My 3.7 doesn't burn oil to any notable degree, nor does it leak. 115k miles.

Bullet proof = Cast block / head.

the block and heads of the KJ's 3.7 are cast too;)

Now if you want to talk about the inherent strengths of inline architecture vs V architecture with the same cylinder count, I won't argue with you...but between the 4.0 and 3.7...we're essentially comparing a smogger 350 vs an LS1...there is no contest IMO. You couldn't pay me enough money to downgrade to a 258 or 4.0 in my KJ, and the only other thing I'd want in it is a cammed 4.7. I wouldn't worry about blowing up the front diff anyway because I don't even use all my 3.7's torque off road

The bottom end of the 3.7 is about bullet proof with the one piece cradle style main bearing caps.

Oh and bullet proof has nothing to do with what the materials are. Some of the most abused engines in the world are made out of aluminum, that would include the block, heads, and connecting rods.

Ford ran a plastic engine, all parts plastic besides the cylinder sleaves and piston rings, for over 1000hours on a dyno with 200 of them at full throttle with no problems.Just a bit pricey for production.

Do you have more info on that? How much did it weigh?
