The old Detroit Diesels were a good engine and job security for mechanics who were good at fixing oil leaks, I have even heard tall tails of the advertising posters leaking oil

10,000 hrs of life on a generator application is a more realistic expectation for that era of diesel engine.

I would not be surprised to see a Detroit 60 series, Cat, Navistar, or Cummins live beyond 10,000 hours on a generator, but even for a Fairbanks Morse that runs at 900 RPM and claims to go 40,000 between overhauls, their service people roll their eyes when they hear 40,000 hrs.

Try this on that deep well - seal the casing around the pipe, use an oilless compressor to pressurize the casing, push the water outta the hole - a suitable compressor takes a lot less power to run than that deephole pump

What - is it true that nobody is seriously considering a wind turbine??? ;)

That is actually a very inventive idea - and I've dabbled with it before when I was trying to fix a clogged pump. Unfortunately, it takes a tremendous volume of air. My 6 HP air compressor couldn't get close to pressurizing it.
BTW: When I finally did get the thing fixed I did so by replacing the pump but I also hired a hydrofracture company to increase flow. They came with a huge truck mounted ram and 2 tanker trucks of water. THAT was a show!

I'm located in an odd spot where the winds hit the mountain above us with tremendous violence but we only get an occasional strong gust. However, I do have 3 creeks on my property with about 100 ft of elevation gain on them. One of the reasons I chose to live here was because of the potential for micro hydro power. (Many years ago I designed and built a small hydro system for a group of houses as a senior engineering project) I have 5 major projects lined up for the next 3 years and #4 is to install the hydro systems.

Chris: If you want some info on induction generators for your micro hydro power, let me know, I worked with it many years ago as an undergrad.
If you want to go with DC to AC via inverters Uffe has most likely forgotten more about that than the rest of us will ever know.

Steve,
Are you talking about over spinning an induction motor by about the slip factor to turn it into a generator?

Lewis: You got it, all you need is a speed switch to turn it on.
More info: One version I developed in my undergrad research was a small spark ignition engine that had a spring loaded sheave on the out put shaft and a counter weight loaded tensioner. When the engine wanted to speed up and produce more watts, the sheave would adjust to a smaller drive diameter to allow it to happen and the induction generator ran at a steady 1875 RPM. To make it look Hi-tech we put two motor run capacitors in a black wooden box and ran a thermocouple wire and coaxial cable between the engine and the wooden box.

The windmill induction generator worked great until the timing belt snapped and sent one of the three blades through the roof only to be stopped by the sheet metal on the ceiling.

Uffe: Please don't get a hernia from laughing about the black wooden box.   Even Universities have trade secrets.

Warp2diesel,
In '81-82 I worked for Sun Exploration and Production(Sun Oil). One of the projects that made me grin involved using a 200hp Ajax natural gas engine to spin a 150hp 3-phase induction motor to generate part of the electricity for one of our oil fields near Seminole, OK. If I recall the Ajax had 2 16" pistons and ran at very low rpms, what a beast. The speed was changed with sheaves and controlled with an electronic governor.

When Ike came though they still had some 100mph winds - I'm not sure how those 200 ft blades would have liked that.

Here is a generator my friend put together from an engine he traded for, a generator, and scrap iron he had on hand. I helped with some wiring issues and manual labor.

Good job, but which one of you had the task of installing all those holes for decreasing overall weight?

Those were already in the channel, there are two channel beams on each side stacked. The hard part was lining up the holes.
