Traded for the GC CRD

Last June I was poking around the local dealer looking at the Grand Cherokee CRD. They called last week and said come on down, they were ready to deal. Of the 60 they originally had, they have 7 left. They could not move them, so were looking to at least trade out from under them. I got well over blue book for my Libby Ltd CRD. Original sticker for the GC CRD was $43k. They let it go for $27K.
I love it. Much quieter than the Libby. Basically a completely different vehicle. Feels much heavier and more solid. I wouldn't have traded if the numbers weren't so enticing. I'm getting about 2 mpg less than the CRD.

Would you mind sharing what $$ you got on your Liberty?

It was an '06 Limited, loaded. They gave me $18k. It had almost 30k miles

Is that a 2007 or 2008? 4WD? Which trim level and options does your Cherokee have?

Hey, lets pull your lift pump & see if it will fit the Liberty-maybe it will be less expensive.
Ya, my dealer told me 3 months ago he could sell a GC crd for under 30k but im trying to
get everything paid off. Plus I dont know how well the particulate filters will hold up to heavy
blends of biodiesel.

I was at Bonneville over the summer when I followed someone who was dropping off their car for service. While I waited for my friend to complete the paperwork I saw a GC CRD (Black, I think) in the lot and walked over to look. A salesman came running (and I do mean running) over to talk with me. I told him I had a Liberty CRD and was not interested in the GC which was stickered at around 45k. Without ANY negotiation or input on my part he told me that I could get the GC for 35k BEFORE my Liberty trade might be figured in the deal. I don't remember the trim level or anything like that, but he said they had 4 (I think) in stock and had not sold any diesel GCs so far this year (was late July/early August).

I never had an interest in the GC and had no intention of buying it and suspect I hurt the guy's feelings when I declined his business card. However, if I was in the market for one I would be very cautious about buying at Bonneville which has a less than stellar reputation in the area.

The GC CRD is a different beast than the Libby. Some quick comparisons:
The libby has a tighter turn radius and shorter wheelbase- making it feel much more nimble in parking lots or on the trail
The GC feels much heavier and more planted on the highway, and rides more quietly.
The GC has a higher rpm at a given highway speed than the libby- it really needs another gear.
The GC seats are more comfy, and the interior more plush. I had leather and heated seats in both.
The libby engine sounded like a diesel - that diesel rumble and rattle we all love so much. The GC is a quieter deeper engine rumble that doesn't necessarily sound like a diesel.
The GC takes 10 qts of pricey engine oil - the libby does not.
The GC doesn't have filter head or egr issues.
The GC can tow 7000 odd pounds, and is sprung for an 800 lb tongue weight.

Would I pay full price for a GC and trade in the libby, no way. Would I trade again with the deal I got - you bet.
They are both excellent vehicles, the libby more sporty, the GC more refined.

I bought a new 08 GC CRD leftover just before the end of the year, only I didn't trade my Liberty in. I intend to keep the GC a long time, and figured that the GC is a better long term prospect than the Liberty. This is based on the comparative luxury of the GC and better long term prospects of the Mercedes engine and transmission. I figure if Chrysler goes down, the mercedes powertrain will allways be serviceable. I am not an offroad wheeler, and want the diesel for long distance traveling because I do a lot of towing.

When I first conceived the ideaof buying the GC CRD, I figured I would sell the Liberty because I really don't need two jeeps. I had and want just two cars. My other car is a 2001 Cougar with 112k that I use as a commuter. After further consideration, I estimate that the resale value of the 05 Liberty with 41k vs the Cougar is about $10,000, so the long term economics favor keeping the Liberty over the Cougar considering the difference of 70,000 mileage between the vehicles. If someone wants to change my mind, just make me an offer!

This is a great time to buy a car. I got the GC CRD Loredo X for $11k under sticker. Comparing the price I paid for the 05 Liberty Sport ($24,000) in March 05, vs the GC in December 08 ($27,900) it would seem that the GC is a comparative bargain. However, those price differentials would widen when considering the Chrysler offered 0% financing at the time I bought the Liberty, which isn't available with the terms of the present deal on the GC.

If you want an in dash navigation unit, Crutchfield says this fits.

I just put this into my 2006 VW TDI Jetta and love it.
It is a Pioneer AVIC-F90BT (Premier Unit). The F900 is the dummied down version.

This unit is great. Plays DVD’s, USB, CD’s, uses Bluetooth to hook up to your phone, voice commands, back-up camera, etc.
PM me for the hack to you can watch movies or change address in the nav unit while driving.
Note that the F90bt and the F900bt are the same size units. One is just a little bit better than the other.
