SAMCO CAC Hoses....One Word

WOW!!!
The first test drive...incredibly obvious difference in immediate response, power and riding. I was running with a lot of soot and wonder if it was the engine getting bogged down with the turbo not pressuring as it should due to original hose deterioration.

Now it is time to clear the codes and see what comes and goes....

I don't understand how new intercooler hoses can give you more power unless the old ones were leaking. Did you notice a leak when you remove the old one?? What codes were you getting, maybe you fixed something?

Turbo underboost
EGR underboost
MAP Sensor Low voltage output.

The hoses are original with 75,000 miles on them. The swelling of the hoses expands them to a point where they do not hold psi well. Unfortunately I have been plagued with these three issues since buying the jeep two months ago. The dealers do not know doo doo and are glad to charge me for diagnostic after diagnostic.

I am hoping the increase turbo pressure will have a positive effect on the codes....maybe...maybe not.

Turbo underboost sounds like a leak. The other two codes may mean you need to clean or replace your MAP sensor on the intake.

edit: manifold pressure being low could cause low reading from the MAP sensor cause from hose leakage. I'm not sure about the EGR so best to clear the codes and see if they come back.

I am currently arguing with moparparts.com over what is called a MAP Sensor. They sent me a bullsh*t part that they insist is the MAP sensor. I cleaned the MAP Sensor that is discussed in the TECH section and it appears in the repair manual as a part called a Air Pressure Sensor. Is your information consistent with mine?

I heard that some parts manuals was getting MAF = mass air flow -- mixed up with MAP = manifold absolute pressure. Sounds like they sent you the MAF sensor.

The Boost Pressure Sensor should be cleaned at every oil change as part of normal preventative maintenance. The Boost Pressure Sensor is located at the top of the back of the head and is covered by the wiring loom (usually). It has a Blue Bosch label on it and is easily spotted if you lift up the loom. It has to be removed with an Allen Key (suggest inserting the long end of the key vertically down behind the wiring loom to allow turning with pilers to remove). Do Not Drop the hex screw into the sensor hole when removing that would be bad! The sensor can be cleaned with contact cleaner and a cotton Qtip or soft tooth brush. I suggest that the Boost Pressure Sensor is responsible for many reported driveability issues, rough idle, and over-fueling. Photos of the dirty boost sensors, even after as few as 8000 miles, show soot caking covering the air temperature sensor. This is even more important to monitor if you do not have a Provent (as the combination of oil fumes in the intake coupled with recirculated soot from the EGR create a slime that cakes up the intake tract and the sensor). Do not expect the dealer to do this as it is not part of normal service interval activity (assuming that they do much of anthing other than change the oil). So if you have a new vehicle put in the Provent asap, then check your boost sensor as part of your maintenance routine (every six months or 8000 miles would be my recommendation after watching mine for the last year and a half).

BOOST PRESSURE SENSOR
DESCRIPTION
The boost pressure/intake air temperature sensor is
mounted to the top of the intake manifold. The sensor
allows the ECM to monitor air pressure within the
intake manifold. This sensor is also used to monitor
the intake air temperature.
OPERATION
When the intake manifold pressure is low sensor voltage output is 0.25-1.8 volts at the ECM. When the intake
manifold pressure is high due to turbo boost, sensor voltage output is 2.0-4.7 volts. The sensor receives a 5-volts
reference from the ECM. Sensor ground is also provides by the ECM. The ECM uses boost pressure combined with
intake air temerature to determine the volume of air entering the engine.
DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING - BOOST PRESSURE/INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE
SENSOR
If the boost pressure sensor fails, the ECM records a DTC into memory and continues to operate the engine in one
of the three limp-in modes. When the ECM is operating in this mode, a loss of power will be present, as if the
turbocharger was not operating. The best method for diagnosing faults with the boost pressure sensor is with the
scan tool. Refer to the Diesel Powertrain Diagnostic Manual for more information.

Sounds like they sent you the temp sensor that's in the lid of your air filter box.

I waited for the RED SAMCO hoses to match my red CRD. They were a pain to install since whoever put on the previous hoses made the clamps difficult to access. Such a simple ting but I felt i needed to hang upside down with a short, articulating screw driver to get the clamps off. Just not a lot of room under the hood. Also put in a PROVENT filter, my wife got tired of smoke coming from under the hood.
The new hoses look fine and I hesitate to say this because I have no numbers to back it up but it really feels a bit faster to me both off the line, winding out and general acceleration. Not a big amount as would be the case if the original hose had a hole, just a better feel overall. I looked at my old hoses and they really looked fine, remarkably clean. I had been running the ORM and Elephant Hose (until just adding the PROVENT) and it amazed me how clean the hoses were. I bought my CRD used and I suspect they were replaced but with about 20K miles I know of and the 2 cheap mods I was surprised how clean they were. So I have a spare set although I expect the SAMCO will last a lifetime.

I did the PROVENT 3K ago finally @ 30K; and finally had time to swap the hoses today. I was also trying to make sure I gave the PROVENT time to clear things up before the new hoses were installed.

I agree my hoses were not as oily as expected, very little oil in the drivers side hose, and almost none in the passenger side, but they did look slightly deformed.
*I haven't driven the tank yet though.

As far as the install goes it is a bit of a headache, a ratchet w/ a universal drive, extension and I think I used a 8mm socket. Driver's side is much simpler. On the passenger side it is incredibility tight, I chose to yank the airbox to get access which made things much easier.

Again KUDOS to SirSam and everyone for they're help with this much needed mod.

Where is everybody getting the Samco hoses from? I tried to contact the distributors on the Samco website to no avail. Just curious so I could call them and get a price on the hoses and shipping as well as color choices.

Do you know if i can purchase the SAMCO hoses in Europe for my CRD for delivery to RSA, i can't find anything locally besides the OEM but they expensive and SAMCO USA won't ship to where i am.

Sounds like they sent you the temp sensor that's in the lid of your air filter box.

It's been previously noted that on one of the parts pages there are two numbers mixed up. One page does have them correct though. Try doing a search. I think it may have been GMTD that listed the correct numbers.
