I just got a good deal on a used light bar but the junkyard dealer said he would not include the wiring harness because he would have to cut up the inside. Is it difficult to take the wiring harness out? I would really like to tell him its not hard to do and all you have to do is ... fill in the blank.

The OEM lightbar harness is very hard to get out,get the switch though and save yourself about $45 at the dealer. The harness(actually there is 3) you'll need to install will be about $100-$150.

Kinda why you don't want a used lightbar,it almost always costs more then buying the lightbar brand new.

Around $400 on Ebay.

Icarl, get the bezel too, that's the thing where the switch locks in.

you'll be alright as long as you get the foot of wire and connectors that go through the roof. You can always fab up some wiring once in the car.

I do recommend the OEM wiring though, much easier.

Since you have an '02, did you check if maybe the wiring is already there?

Rip out the left bezel, if there is a big white connector there you have the light bar wiring already.

i got the light bar for cheap but i don't want to spend money on a factory harness so I'll probably just wire it up independently of the existing wiring. Hmm, Let's see i'll need to buy a relay with the proper amerage, some wires, and a toggle switch and maybe an led light to tell me if i accidently turn it on.

yeah, thanks Tony. I read your install and other posts last night. Good work.

I don't have the existing wiring in place but i don't mind wiring stuff. As long as it works is all that matters.

I think i will do a wiring diagram for this custom job. Anyone want to do one up for me? ha ha.

Maybe i'll use big magnets instead of bolts then i won't have to drill through the roof.

Here's a basic setup.

And I wouldn't trust any magnet, when you have the covers of the light bar works like a scoop so at high speed it may fly of! :D

well, good news. My light bar showed up today. Its in good shape other than all the dead bugs but hey who cleans inside their light bar right? So after cleaning it, it is now waiting to be installed.

Hey Tony, that's quite the amazing diagram there. Did you do that yourself? So how did you come up with a 30 amp relay?

This site may also prove to be useful.

If that is the case i may have to get aircraft landing lights.

Yep I did that myself. Done a bunch back in the day when I still needed to, used to alter/ add stuff to big rig trucks. ( think Mack size ) And I am an auto mech so...easy peasy for me :D

I came up with 30 amps for the relay because that's what most of them come in standard (hella / Bosch etc). Didn't calculate that.

But if your interested: let's say for arguments sake the light bar is 200 Watts (so 50W each lamp) they need around 16 Amps total to work.

The formula is P=UxI or in this case I=P:U so 200W:12V= 16.66A

This also explains why you need 3/8 cable on your 1000W winch, you can now do the howmany Amps? math yourself. :) :)

Class dismissed!

Did you get the wire that runs through the roof? If not I'd get the OEM to prevent leaks! (and bad connections.)

Use a whole bunch of good RTV sealent on there too!

hey thanks Tony. i did get that wire that goes through the roof with the little rubber seal. I still need to get some fasteners. I guess i could get those from the dealer or just use nuts and bolts.

Ok guys I have the same problem. Got mine from the junk yard with the switch and the wire from the roof. The dealership tells me they can not get the kit without the light. Do you have a part number for the wires at all. I got my light for $100 with an evic so if I have to pay $150 for the wires I still made out. I wish I knew how to read that diagram you have Tony.

I went to the dealer and got some info today. However they want $8 per nut/rivet so i think i will shop elsewhere. But i will post this anyway in case it helps someone else. They did give me some free nuts and bolts from their parts bin though.

Well, basically from what i understand you need 2 circuits with a relay. One circuit is what powers the lights and the other circuit is the control circuit that includes the switch. A relay is like a switch except that the control circuit turns the switch on or off. This is what turns your lights on or off. The relay is needed for larger amperage circuits like fog lights. You could also use just a switch if you can find one that can handle the correct amperage.

Okay, here is my circuit diagram. The numbers are based off of Tony's diagram. Let me know if there are any mistakes.
