Never had a problem with my 242 on the KJ.

Hasn't stuck nor has it ever let me down.

From what Ive read, ATF+4 is straight 30w but idk if theres any truth to that. Someone posted it on JU.

When hot, it's a 20 wt. Due to it's excellent cold temp properties, I'm guessing it would be like a 5W20.

Nope, I was referring to the original Quadra trac used in FSJ's through 1979. It was a Borg Warner T-case ( BW 1335?) and had to use AMC Q-trac fluid unless you put a part-time kit in it. But the 247 is probably anothe fine example of "you better run what they tell ya." T-cases seem to be a prime example of the KISS principle. If you don't KISS, you get more headaches.

wow, thats way before my time! :)

I have been running ATF+4 in my 242. I have not had any problem with the 242 and I use it a lot. I think I will leave mine alone. I thought the ATF+4 was a synthetic ????

The Mopar ATF+4 is a synthetic. But like all synthetics, the quality is different. The Mopar ATF+4 is pretty good stuff, however it does break down quicker. The Amsoil ATF has a better additive package, comes from a better base stock ( better grade of synthetic) and will last longer under higher stresses of heat. If I were you, I would change my transmission and transfer case fluid much sooner than what the owners manual recommends. HEAT is the main destroyer in most working components.

TokyoJoe: "So what KJ's got what T-case?"

My best shot at "guess that T-case" without looking anything up

Sport - 231,242,241
Renegade -231,242,241
Limited - 231,242

Auto 231 or 242
Manual -5spd=231 6spd=241

4 Cyl 231 & maybe 242
6 Cyl 231,242, 241
CRD 242

2002 231 or 242
2003-04 231 or 242
2005-07 231, 242, 241

231 is the command trac (part-time) and the 242 is the select-trac (full-time)

the 231 doesn't suck! Teehee

Seriously, though, the 242 has a center differential to allow 4wd to be engaged on dry pavement, and that center diff also locks in 4hi.
