Even though my front is hanging a little loose right now, I would be more interested in a rear bumper with tire carrier. Once I can run a larger tire, I don't want to have to climb on the roof to pull down my spare. Question: will we have to swing the tire out to just open the glass or will it be possible to open the glass without moving the spare?

I'm interested in front and rear. My only request is that it is attractive enough (goes with the KJ's lines) that my wife will let me buy it! ;)

Any rough guesstimates on what you'll be pricing these at?

Martin, hope I am not overstepping, but...

The current design he is looking to build is adjustible hieghtwise. 1 setting for wheeling departure angle, and 1 low for normal road use so it doesn't block a lot of the rear window. Still in design phase though, but what I have seen looks good.

This is something that I will try to accomplish. I just can't say until I get my hands on the KJ again. I think I may be able to pull it off, but I just don't know at this time. Anyone have two minutes to run outside with a tape measure and measure from the top of their stock bumper to the bottom of the glass hatch? Also, anyone know if there are any design changes to the rear bumper from 02-06, or was it just the front?

From resting on the bumper to the edge of the glass is just under 21 in.

I don't think anything on the rear bumpers change, I haven't noticed any different between my 1st and 2nd one.

Also would be interested in front and rear.

I'd be interested in the rear bumper. I would want something "minimal", very simple and low profile; the cheaper the better. I like the spare where it is now, and when I get a full-size tire for my spare I will get the spare tire spacer from Rocky Road Outfitters, and hopefully it will clear the glass. If my hopes become reality, I will not need a tire-carrier on the bumper.

Question: why do you want to build the rear bumper with the swing-away tire carrier? Does it really give any advantage on or offroad?

I'm very interested in the rear w/ swing-away. Is it going to be like most XJ rears I see though? Most of the ones I see have an open space between the bumper and the bottom of the tail lights where the old bumper used to be. If this is the case, I may look elsewhere or have one custom fab'ed. I'd really prefer a rear that would match the lines of the present bumper and would match the ARB front I have in the plans.

Also, what are the chances of having a set of KJ skink sliders (powdercoated) ready for purchase in early March?

My bumpers are formed to follow the styling of the stock bumpers, but built with better clearance angles. There won't be any gaps under the taillights. I don't make my stuff out of 2xwhatever tubing and just stick it on and call it good. My products have to look almost as good as they function.
Chances are really good on those skink sliders. Once I get the manufacturer thing figured out, they will be cutting the mounting plates and it's time to rock and roll.

Well, RockLizard said he will try to design with and w/o.

I think the main reason for with is because I requested it when we were talking last week.

My reasons:
1.Tailgate is rated at 50lbs... My Stock tire on steel wheel weighed 49lb, MTRs on Aluminum-76lb.
With that much weight on the gate and wheeling bounces, it can pop the pop welds on the support fram in the gate, causing vibrations and your latches/hinges to loosen/shift.
2.The spare location is so low, that I have dragged it on departure of some obstacles in Kansas of all places!!
3. I can no longer put my tire on the gate due to reason #1 and the fact that I had my holes filled and tailgate smoothed.
4. personnal reasons, it has gotten painful to take my spare off the roof.

I will be doing bumpers with and without carriers. If you are using the stock carrier and are happy with that, then you don't need a big fancy swing away carrier, especially since most of you guys are never going to run bigger than 31's. The advantages of a tire carrier? Well, having a bigger than stock tire on the stock carrier could damage the sheet metal of the rear door, depending on the reincement built into the structure. Putting it inside takes up valuable storage space. and putting it on the roof is one of the worst places for a spare tire. It looks the coolest, but it kills your gas mileage especially when used in a basket rack, and your COG gets incredibly high. I am an XJ guy, and KJ's are much heavier and taller than the XJ, and the KJ just doesn't have the flex of an XJ, so the KJ can get very tippy on the trails in off camber situations, so putting more weight on the roof is recipe for disaster. I used to have a roof rack and 6.5" lift on my XJ with 34's, and I don't know how many times I felt like rolling over or had people jumping on my XJ to keep me down. I lowered my XJ to 4.5" lift and lost the rack, and fell much more stable, but still not quite happy with the COG. I'm still a little tippy, and my XJ is a little shorter and wider than Ted's (USAFCOP) KJ, so I bet you guys get some real pucker going on when out on the trails. Keeping the jeep as low and wide as possible is the best thing you can do with a trail machine. You already have disadvantages, why compound those by stacking more weight on the roof and running stock backspaced wheels. If I had a KJ, I can gaurantee I would have the fenders chopped, 15x8" rims with 3.25" BS and some 1.25" spacers and as little lift as possible to run atleast 32 or 33" tires, but no one is going to start chopping up their KJ bodies yet, so you have to do the best with what you have. Make that jeep work for you, not against you.

I have an ARB up front, but I am looking for a steel rear bumper. Main requirement for me is a good solid jacking point either side for the Hi-Lift. If you incorporate the tow bar that's a plus. I have the Mopar unit now but I'd switch if the bumper won't accommodate it. The spare on my KJ will stay on the rear door. Can't wait to see what you come up with!! :D

Sounds like everything has been thought out as far as price, weight, the way it will look etc. it sounds really good. I want to see a real picture before I say that I am sending a check in the mail. But at this time I am right there on the line of saying I want a front and rear one.
Also will they be powdercoated, or will we need to paint? Or will that be an option as well?
Are there any drawings yet of the rear one? Just wondering?
Keep us informed! :D

Here you go, threw this together on MSPaint. Ted is coming over today and I will get some measurements and see if I can plot them into the CAD program, but here is the vision I have so far.

Awesome design using Paint. Wish I could be quick to create like that.

It looks like you have two mounting points. I was thinking......Uh oh!

If you have an adjustable, locking mount that holds the spare low during regular driving and still have access to opening the rear glass and then slide it up or remount at a higher position ofr when off-roading.

Is that what those two mounts are for in your drawing?

The two mounts just show the idea for the two different positions. There aren't two mounting plates, just one, that adjusts between the high and low position.
