That's a return line check valve - at the time the install was done - no one knew how much pressure the injector pump could deal with so it has a 2 psi check valve - which vents to the stock return line - and being at the highest point in the system - eliminates air bubbles.
The Kennedy's about a 4 psi pump, The in tank Cummins is about 6 or 8?
so in retrospect - the check valve is overkill - but I'm still impressed with the install.
as to your question on the hoses - you should be okay if you eliminate the connector on the supply line
- the connector is great for a pressure system - but isn't really vacuum tight
and with the lift pump outside the tank - you're still pulling a vacuum on that portion of the line.
