here's some pics of the rock rails i've been working on. I used the brackets from my de-funked nerf bars as a starting point. The tubing is 2"x2"x1/4".....heavy duty!

from what I can see they look pretty good, I thought about making some like that that were completely bolt on, but I would still say they will be much stronger with a bar that bolts to the pinch weld

yeah, i am considering that. i want to bolt them on and do some testing to see if it is needed.

what thickness are the legs? the pinch weld will distribute the load when your hit them, and right now it will have few places to distribute that load and it could break a bolt or two

Add a pinch weld bar and some side to side gussets for extra strength while dragging across rocks. Not all pressure is exerted upwards when hitting rocks. A lot pulls backwards on the rails as you drive/slide over them. Great start so far, look pretty beefy.

all the tubing is 1/4" wall. I also upgraded the mounting points with 3/8" grade 8 hardware. The nuts are mounted inside the "frame" of the jeep. I welded the nuts to a piece of thick sheet metal, fished them thru the "frame" and did a 1/4" plug weld to hold them in place. I was planning on adding a 1-1/4" tube between the brackets that rests on the bottom of the rocker panel. This should help distribute the weight on the body as well as act as a brace.

I'll post more pictures as I progress. Thanks for the input.

I have CRS rock rails welded to the frame (no pinch weld attachment). I have actually bent one of the rails (slightly) and these things are super beefy. The lack of a pinch weld attachment has not been an issue. I think that if they are mounted to the frame as well as you say, you won't need one. My wife and i can both jump on these things and they don't deflect at all. The entire Jeep rocks instead. The guy that welded them is a professional pipe welder. He did some kinda tungsten TIG weld or something that he said was super strong.

i'm done with these bad boys for now. i added some angle iron to the front of the rock rails that rests on the bottom of the pinch weld. without it there is a large moment arm from the front of the rail (right behind the front tire) to the front support. with the angle iron there, it can transfer the weight directly to the pinch weld without any flexing.

i don't do as much off roading as i'd like, but i think these will do the trick. I really liked how they turned out from an appearance standpoint, only time will tell how they hold up on the trail.

i do not have any drawings for the brackets, however i may be able to get some drawings once the weather clears up. i was actually planning on making drawings for the whole thing first, but decided to wing it. it's more fun that way. i only used them because i already had them and the mounting points.

now that I think about it, you might be able to order them from your favorite dealership as those brackets are the factory brackets for the chrome step/nerf bars.
