I did some parts pricing on wholesalemopar for the timing belt replacement and water pump:

Tensioner 5142798AA $63.89
Idler Pulley (2) 5142573AA $105.02
Timing Belt 5142579AA $137.94
Timing Cover Gasket 5066921AA $12.52

Water Pump 5093911AB $166.98
Gasket 4864575 $2.30
O Ring 5159019AA $4.11

Accessory Drive Belt 5072437AC $91.33

Parts Total $584.09

There have been recommendations to replace the water pump and timing belt together. At $175 just for parts, I'm wondering why I should replace the water pump which is showing no signs of problems. Its exterior to the timing belt, so I don't believe its an access problem. I haven't been reading about water pump failures, and if it were to fail it doesn't have the grave consequences of a timing belt failure.

I would inspect the w/p carefully and go from there. BBBBBUUUUUTTTTTTTTTTTT if you see a leak or have play, how long will you have to wait for the part with it apart. I would be sure to get the tensional any pulleys. 100k is alot of miles for any of these componets then we are expecting the last another 100k, something to think about.

You can get a Dayco Poly Cog belt for ~31 bucks....please don't spend a hundred bucks on one.

Owh yes it does. The waterpump is driven by the timing belt.

As I said earlier: the thing that holds the fan is NOT the waterpump.

and I have a ways to go before I swap out the T belt, rollers, tensioner, and water pump. On my Wife's TDI, I do the belt every 60K and the rollers, tensioner, and water pump every 120. Since 100K is closer to 120K I will go with complete do list.

If your paying someone to do the timing belt I would do the water pump at the same time. If you are doing it yourself it's optional. Just remember, a failed water pump can take out your timing belt resulting in $$$$ repairs. $166 would seem cheap compared to replacing valves.

60k is pathetic. My TDI has 40k interval, presumably because of the larger injection pump on the automatic. There are 100k kits for TDIs, very worthy of consideration. I will certainly install one at next interval for mine at 100k. And my CRD as well, but it's still at 56k.

I am a decent shade tree mechanic but if you are planning to do yours, I offer to be a second set of hands and will bring mine down to you for a double header.

Sorry, hopefully by time mine is due, I will be retired, sold my Delaware house and moved permanently to NW Washington. I plan to have a separate garage built at my place in Washington 30x36 when I get there. That is a tall order for 2009, maybe wishful thinking how things are going for the rest of the world.

That's scary  But at the 30 month mark mine only has 22k (miles) on it so it will be a while even at 62k
