well afte 140,000 miles the kj looks like its due for some valve stem seals, getting a little puff of black/blue smoke on start up :(

now my question to those that know, i have a bit of wrenching ability is this a job i could tackle by my self or should i just go to an engine shop and get them to do it

i really dont want to take the heads of if i dont need to

Well with the 3.7 being a SOHC engine that means the cam needs to come off, you'll need a valve spring compressor that does not require head removal and a air compressor with adapter to take place of the sparkplug to keep the valve in place when taking the spring keepers off.Might as well take it to a engine shop and have the heads rebuilt since if the valve seals are leaking then it's a good possibility that the valve guides are also worn and need to be replaced also. It's not a fun job being a SOHC engine and having the correct tools to deal with the cam chains is almost a must.

Are you consuming oil?A little puff on start up isn't a big deal. Now if you're going through a quart of oil in 5-600 miles I'd fix it now.

heh, thats nothing. Our corolla has been going through that much oil since it had 40,000miles! My jeep will never live up to that thing.
