Ok, the new turbo is on its way. Probably about $700 with shipping, from a dealer contact I had on another forum.

Now comes the fun: I'm not installing this new turbo without having the proper protections in place - gauges. I understand that it would be good to have both an EGT and a boost gauge, but where should the sensors for these live? I haven't installed these before, so the "perfect" location eludes me.

Besides those two, are there any other gauges that I should look to install for maximum reliability? I was thinking maybe a transmission temp gauge, but where would the sensor for that live? Right next to the transmission on the cooler line? In the pan?

Y'all have been a huge help with this, I hope I can be as much help to someone else in the future.

I should mention:

If you know the "normal" reading for any of these, and the appropriate range (like for the EGT) that would also be great in helping me choose the right parts.

Looking at Summit Racing for Autometer gauges... WOW there are a lot of choices. Anything that helps narrow it down would rock. Where have people mounted their gauges? Anyplace other than the driver's A pillar? Overhead? On the dash itself? I guess I can remove that handle for the pod.

gmctd tends to keep updating his threads - this had the EGT (although you have to scroll down a bit)

geordi: Glow Shift gauges are cost effective than Summit and they sell the pods to mount them. Besides, they are on the East Coast and can ship to you fast without coughing up the extra bucks.

Since you have your turbo off for obvious reasons, you can drill and tap the probe right where it should be, just before the turbo.

The EGT gauges are for mostly gassers that run hotter than our diesels. The hottest I ever had mine was 1250 for a couple seconds when I was pulling my trailer onto an entrance ramp that was going up hill. Boost never goes over 30PSI even when I tow, but thanks to the 5.9L Cummins a lot of boost gauges go to 60PSI. Trans temp gauges all seem to be ranged for their application.

Hope this helps and gets you back in action.

Boost gauge was all I ever mounted before I let the Jeep go - best place is in the intake elbow on the manifold. It's easily drilled and tapped, just remove the boost hoses and put some paper/cloth inside the elbow further in than the hole you're drilling to make sure you get all the small metal fragments out when you pull the paper/clotch out again.

My gauge posted pressure in bar, and my 03 wastegated turbo produced 1.2-1.3 bar on heavy accelerations. 0.5 bar while cruising at 60mph.
