There are several prior (maybe current) Navy fellas around here, they'll find you shortly I'm sure

I think one of the questions that I've always found to be important is

"Why the Navy?"

It's not a trick question but usually one that gets people thinking about what they actually want to do in the Navy or any other branch for that matter

well there's plenty to do in the navy, but if i was seriously intersted in being around ships most of the time i'd probably persue the coast guard

there are a lot of stupid places you can get stuck being stationed in the navy that don't even have water

your height wont be problem for the air force as long as your weight is proportional. i knew a kid here that was 6 foot 10 inches. But whatever you do DO NOT be Security Forces or you will end up in Minot ND. Its just like nevada but prolly flater and instead of sand its snow and COLD as bawls

I am in the Navy, in the Medical field so it is a little different then what the "REAL" Navy is supposed to be.

The biggest thing is to figure out what you want to do and then try to relate it to a navy job.

Right now the best thing going for the Military is job security.

As for questions ask away there are a bunch of Military Folks on the board and will give you plenty of info.

Im 31B Military Police in the Army. The best advice I can give you is If you dont like to spend alot of time away from home, family, & friends etc... Join the Air Force. Reason being is because they have the shortest deployments. Navy, Army, & Marines tend to have high deployment times & tours IMO. Alot of it depends on your MOS aswell. If you have any questions let me know.

He is right about the deployment thing. Air Force deployments are only 6 months but you can volunteer for a year long one also. But about the time with family thing, I may not deploy for months at a time but with my job I do a "mini deployment" every 4 days. I go to my work location which is anywhere from 30 minutes to about and hour and a half away from base and have to stay there for 4 days straight. I am the Air Force version of nosnorb. 3P0, Security Forces

Thats the reason I said depends on MOS. My wife is in the Air Force she is a 1N3 (Arabic Linguist). She works a regular 9-5 schedule. Downside is alltogether basic training & tech school is 2yrs long. Plus side is for the tech school part of it ,If married your family will be stationed with you at DLI (Defense Language Institute) located in Monterrey California. Its a very beautiful place. The base there has an awesome gym etc... I would go back if we could. Bonuses for the Linguist MOS is amazing. Worth looking into.

I served in the Navy and Naval Reserve as an Electrician on a nuclear aircraft carrier (A floating city).
I served in the Air National Guard (1st time around) as an Avionics Tech (Comm/Nav Systems).
I completed Army ROTC but did not get commissioned (stupid divorce).
I served in the Army National Guard (Patient Admin & Radio Operator).
I served in the Air National Guard (2nd time around) as a Supply Tech.
I retired last September.
I work for the Air Force.

Ask your questions.

I can't tell you about the Coast Guard or Marines, though I had 4 aunts and uncles serve in the Marines.

If you grew up next to a lake, might I suggest the Coast Guard. They have the longest officer training program putting the Marines basic to shame (17 weeks - it used to be longer I think).

Since you want to get into Sports Admin, I would suggest going into the Services/MWR field with any of the military branches.

Better yet, go to college for Sports Mgt. Ohio University has one of the best programs in the country. Their Masters program is tops.
You can also do Navy ROTC while doing it (not at Ohio U though). The Ohio State University has a great Sports Mgt program also and they have Navy ROTC.

You can also just choose a totally unrelated career in the military just to have another skill background to fall on after you get out. I would not recommend one that you can't really use (like a Tank driver for the Army or Marines).

While you might have a special fondness for the water (lake where you are growing up), being in the Navy, on a huge ship, is not the same thing as being on a "boat" out on a lake. You will be closer to those "good feelings" with the Coast Guard.

If you have any thoughts of staying with the military as a career, then I would suggest the Air National Guard and become an AGR (Active Guard-Reserve) when a position opens up. It is the ultimate career life. You are active duty military but you stay put. You do not transfer around from location to location throughout your career. All the active duty benefits but none of the pack-up and move every few years issues.

1st rule of thumb: Do not believe everything a recruiter tells you. While there are completely honest ones out there, there are just as many bad ones that will lie and convince you to do this or that to fit the needs of either themselves or the military branch they work for...and not YOUR needs and wants. Gather info, talk to them, but do not sign anything. Take info they give you and go home, google the info, talk to vets and retirees by visiting the local VFW and American Legion. Then go back to the recruiters armed with a wealth of info.

Shoot any questions you have in a PM or here. I was the Sr. Job counselor at one the MEPS not long ago. There isn't a bad branch of service. Some may be better or worse for YOU, it's important to find out what you are really looking for so that you can make the right choice.

(p.s. Small Boys are so much better than Carriers!)

As for 'asking questions' and the '1st rule of thumb' Toykojoe elated to, he is correct. Again, don't commit to anything during your first visit. Go home, think about what you've been told and write down all the questions which come to mind before you return to visit the recruiter a second time.

The one thing Tokyojoe failed to include is that the Navy once again has a "brown water" force called "SWCC" (pronounced; "Swick"). But you must be in top physical condition because these men train much like SEAL's, and the drop out rate is just about the same as well. Your size won't hinder you but the least bit of fear you may have, will! Seriously, the dedication of these special boats teams is intense. These men (SWCC) insert and extract SEAL Teams and other Special Forces within hostile combat zones among other missions. Depending on which special boat team you enter, you could find yourself cruising rivers, or on the ocean, both in high speed boats.

As far as the Navy, I think you're on the right track myself, and that's coming from a guy who spent 12 years in the Army. By the way, driving and commanding Abrams main battle tanks. I'll get to my post Army career in minute. Anyway, I am a Gulf War (Desert Storm) Veteran who was with the 1st Tiger Brigade of the 2nd Armor Division. We were deployed from Saudi Arabia into Kuwait along with armor from both the 2d & 1st Marines. The Marines didn't have enough tanks back then so they were operating Army Abrams tanks. Now you may hear people from one branch of service disrespect another branch but let me tell you that when you have entered combat (in my case with Armor Marines), you hold those "brother's" to the highest regard for the rest of your life. It is my opinion that those who dis another branch, have either, never served, or never served in battle. I also know for a fact that U.S. Army Rangers have the highest regard for their "brother's" from USMC Force Recon.

Okay so the bottom line as to why I think you're on the right track with thoughts of joining the Navy is that your first choice or even the Air Force for that matter are the two branches I would recommend (and have) to others in today's world. Unless you're into sandboxes? Which reminds me, someone stated incorrectly about deployments regarding the Air Force. I have a cousin who's step-son flies the C130 (cargo) from Saudi into Iraq and has deployed 5, yes, 5 times.

On a side note, as for Fallon, my nephew recently returned from Atsugi Japan to become a instructor at the top gun school. He is a Aviator in the F/A 18 Super Hornet. He likes the place a lot better than he did Japan. Then again, when I asked him and his wife just prior to leaving if they would miss Japan, she said she would miss all her friends (other pilots wifes) and my nephew remarked, not really, I can't tell you much about it other than I have heard it's a really nice place. In 2008, he spent roughly 6 weeks at home, the rest of that time he was at sea on the carrier cruising both the Pacific and Indian oceans.

Okay as for this former Tank Commander, Tokyojoe was right, there isn't much calling in civilian life for tank crew members but I have no regrets. I wouldn't trade my experiences for anything. Today I am a Operating Engineer playing with heavy construction equipment in a stone quarry and my tank career (aside from being a veteran) quickly got me moved up the union list for training, and soon after, a job. The same job I've been at since then.

Hey, whatever you decide, just take your time and good luck!

same problem here..i just turned 18 and i'm 6'6, my brother was a NAVY Seal but he was 6'4'', I'm thinking about the Israeli Defense Forces or the NAVY, but my height is an issue...so instead I'm playing football for ASU.

I never heard of height being an issue. Whats the issue with height? Is it just for Seals & SF etc... or something? Something new to me.

well...since I'm Jewish and also am 1/4 Israeli I can be in I.D.F., height is no issue there because everyone 18 ahs to be in Israeli Army, but NAVY seals, its like, you can be whatever when you trail, but when your over 6'5'', then your more prone to not being qualified to pass, me being 6'6'', I cant run as fasdt as someone 6'0'' the same build as me, its all based on that (from what my brother said, he told me that i would make it, but i did get a letter to goto BUDS, maybe I will do it, but I have 3 choices, college football at ASU, IDF or NAVY Seals.
