The wife mentioned the jeep was steering a bit loose, its hard to tell if I noticed it myself, or just imagined it, but what might the problem be "if" it is loose?

first define loose

could be a number of things from
bad tires, tie rod ends, ball joints, low steering fluid level, rack and pinion going bad, roads, to name a few

A buddy and I took it out last night (he knows what to look for, etc) and we narrowed it down to nothing (for now). Its not the ball joints, cause there is no vibration in the wheel at all, its smooth, even in the highway, not the tie rod ends cause it is in alingment still, he thought it could be the sway bar but those are in tight... What are some other symptoms of bad rack and pinion? I guess I will double check the steering fluid tonight... We basically came to the conclusion that if there is something there it is very very very minor, nothing that can be easily noticed, so where we are now is just pay attention and if gets worse, notice what gets worse. Seems plenty safe right now without the need of a mechanic taking a few hours to tear through the entire suspension and steering system to double check everything.
