Any ideas for engine swaps out there? I've seen the posts on the 4.7L. It seems pretty complicated electronically. What about stand alone swaps that don't interface with the drivetrain and chassis (just like the old days)?

so many thinks on your vehicle rely on computers, i think it would be easier to just do the wiring, or have a proffesional do it.

I could swap in a chevy 350 V-8 and get the same torque, and crapy mileage, the Crd and the 3.7 are great engines. I have a CRD and I rented a 3.7 in Baja for a week. I think the 3.7 had more power, I ran down the beach at about 100 mph for 30 miles.

You couldn't pay me enough to ruin a KJ by putting a 4.0 in it

That's worse then a 2.4 gas KJ,one of GM's worst disasters along with any V-6(besides the 4.3) they've ever made.

I like the 4.0's too. So good we have two but they are in Jeeps. :D

Sure would rather have one of those than the 3.7. Stroke it to a 4.6L and have a jolly time.

not familiar with that one, first engine i ever built was a 300 I6

well, then had to build it again because i put one of the berring caps on backwards

was one of those build and learn build and learn kinda deals

if / when my 3.7 goes, itll either be a swap or a new build

Really? the 3.8s and 4200s always seem to be doing pretty darn well at high mileage

My dad's 3500 I5 hasn't given him a lick of concern either

The 3.8's,GENII's and III's,have a bad habit of warping the plastic upper plenum causing leaks,do about 2-3 a month on 3.8's,do 5-10 a month of the 3.1/3.4's.The 4.2 is just underpowered, haven't heard really much bad with it but the vehicle it is in leaves a very sour taste in my mouth. The 3.5 I5's are a joke, the tach sensor likes to blow apart and cause some very funky issues with that engine.Gm hasn't known how to build a engine since '99.

The 4200 in the TB isn't any more underpowered than the 3.7 is in the KJ IMO.

the balljoints/tie rod ends in the TB are pretty crap...but it's not like we're a group to cast stones on that subject.

the only issues I've seen/heard of with the 3500 I5s is the head issue...and everybody knows about the bloody intakes on 3100s/3400/3800/3500/3900 V6s

the 2.9 in my bronco II was awesome, i miss it a bit, but the bronco didn't weigh a dime compared to our jeeps

The LS's series is an unqualified success, and I am not a chevy fan...

If you want a 4-popper oil burner, get a 4bt and don't deal with all of the issues the CRD seems to sprout. "Well built," "reliable," and "italian" are rarely heard together in the automotive world for a reason.... But nothing on a vehicle that relies on an integrated computer system ( pretty much anything made in the last 15 years) is going to be an easy swap electrically unless you gut the whole thing and go with aftermarket gauges, including speedo, and swap trannies, too. The 5.7 Hemi is smaller dimensionally than a 4.7 V8. Buy a totalled Ram, durnango, or GC & swap everything! You first, though. :D
