I have a 2005 CRD and I bought some Mobil1 fluid to replace the stuff that's been in there for 70k miles. According to the book, depending on if I have the "track-lock" limited slip I will need the additive. I have the window sticker but don't know if I need the additive for not. Any idea? Thanks.

Yes, you need 4 oz of a friction modifier. I like to use Mobil 1 75w90, 75w140 if you tow or wheel regularly.

He only needs it if he has the trac lok.

There will be a tag on your rear axle saying yay or nay. Also, when you pull the diff cover off to drain the fluid, you can look at the carrier

Does your window sticker mention having Trac-Lock? Or, does your rear axle have a green sticker on it that says the same?

If so, Yes you need it. If Not, no you don't. (though it won't hurt anything if installed in an "open", Non trac-lock diff)

Where is the little sticker? I could not find any stickers or the metal tags I have seen. Would it hurt to just add the modifer if your unsure? I'm not sure I like the rubber plug in the rear diff fill hold.

there should be a green tag around the axle close to the wheel, I cant remember if its on the drivers side or the passengers though

just add it will not hurt anything but your bank account  Not sure on the rubber plug??? Is it leaking or something ? It will not fall out, if thats what you are worried about have ahd a couple of XJs that ran upwards of 265,000/280,000 miles and they were still hanging in there when I sold them

Additive wouldn't hurt anything in a regular diff.

Well I talked to a guy at the dealer and he said if you have both rear tires off the ground and you try to spin one side and it spins freely you Do Not have trackloc and if the wheel fights you when you try to spin in then you Do have tracloc. Easy way to tell if your sticker fell off. Thanks for the replies.

If the TL is in good shape, both tires Should spin in same direction. IF it is worn out, they may not. An open diff or worn out TL should spin tires in opposite directions when trying this trick.

If the tranny is in P then the wheel should not turn if its off the ground. If its an open diff the other tire will spin in the other direction.

I can't believe you passed up the perfect "That's what she said." opportunity with this thread. I mean look at the thread title.

Sorry for the inappropriate response and thread jack...

You could also go to <customerassist@daimlerchrysler.com> and request a build sheet with your vin#. The trac-loc is listed as: DSA - Anti-spin Differential Rear Axle.
