Pumped again and the nozzle did not turn off.

AUGH I hate the SUNOCO at Annapolis Way in Woodbridge. This is the second time the nozzle did not shut off and sprayed diesel everywhere and all over me. Isn't it a law that the nozzle has to shut off when the fluid reachhed the outlet of the nozzle? I have to upload the photos later. They didn't even offer a free car wash and the Jeep is covered in fuel. Grrrrrrr.

The nozzle was fully inserted to maximum depth in the fuel filler tube?

Only in the begining as to check if the nozzle will shut off, I do this on any car to see if the nozzle will work or not. it has up till now. Once the test works I pull the nozzle out about an inch to let it lay more naturally in line with the filler neck. Like "normal" when you tank any car.

My Dodge and GMC do that regularly when I'm manually topping off the tank, as has the KJ, due to foaming - but the nozzles all auto-shutoff if fully inserted into the filler tube, whereupon I assume control and withdraw for the top-off procedure - I like to see fuel in the filler neck when tripping to ensure max mileage - never do and cannot depend on repeatability of the nozzle's auto-turnoff function - the modernized stations even have a prophylactic diaphragm on the nozzle for full insertion, oh yeah, as the pumps have been converted to PID control systems to harvest the effluent - really big bucks there, particularly in summer climes

This wasa on the initial fill, from 0-17.5 gallons, I always shove to nozzle as far as it will go to test the auto off. Then I back it off just enough for the pumping process to work. This has happened only at this station and on this pump. I have pumped all over the world with Jeep and this is the only place it has happend.

Around here you are responsible for your own fuel spills so I would quietly leave if I did that.

The foaming in diesel causes the problem because the nozzle shut off device is the same mechanism for the gasoline.

Does that location also have diesel for trucks?

The gasoline gpm delivery flow is now regulated by the gpm flow for diesel is not regulated.

Many locations put in a larger pump for diesel especially if there is a dedicated island with the larger diesel nozzles (truck size).

Call the state Weights and Measures department and file a complaint. They will test the pump and shut it down if faulty. :wink:

I have had the nozzle not turn off and spill diesel, and every time it was in Virginia. Never happened anywhere else.

Must be a Virginia thing.

I have no problem cleaning a mess I made, it was not my fault and the clerk seemed to not really give a crap.

Could be the maintenance guys are not too particular as to which nozzle they're using to replace the bad one - I've seen new (or cleaned) nozzles with the original nasty green vinyl cover - might just be a task for SW&M

Here they open a new one with 7 bays and each bays have 3 dual pumps and each bay have a diesel pump. All the station around town have the pumps on the out side but no this one.
It looks that the Country is going to go diesel soon. Also old station have to renew their tanks and when they do they have to install diesel.

I've had the pump not shut off once, but luckily I was sitting on the Jeep and heard fuel splattering on the ground. It was just a bit of fuel, but you know how oil is, you can spill a thimble full and it looks like the Exxon Valdez. I asked the attendant for some kitty litter, but they didn't have any. Go figure?

Pumped again and the nozzle did not turn off.
