 Post subject: shuttering while coasting,

I drive my jeep, my wife drives hers, she has been complaining that the engines was missing and sputtering, so I did what any good husband would do and replaced the fuel filter, no help says she, as I don't drive our crd much and it is somewhat hilly around here, ( torque out, torque in) it was hard for me to diagnose, but finally, yesterday I drove it for about 300 miles. I have surmised that it is not a motor, fuel delivery problem at all, as the motor did not miss a beat, the slight to moderate shuttering only occurs during non torque events, ie coasting. Am I wrong to think that this is a transmission problem. The first thing I am doing this week is to change out the tranny fluid, If that does not work, is an after market torque converter the only solution? I have read some of the posts about this, but we do not tow anything , nor are we seeking higher performance, It would be typical of Chrysler to spec out a weak tranny for this motor. Be fore I would drop money into a new converter I would probably hunt down a manual tranny from Canada, or Africa. We love this vehicle, and plan on keeping it well into our retirement. Any advice from my new friends on this newly discovered website would be greatly appreciated. thanks, and keep on wheelin!!

You didn't list the mileage, which is important here, but I would check the cross&pinion bearings (u-joints) in the driveshaft first, then possibly loose or broken engine-support bracket or\and isolators (motor mounts), since the shudder occurs only at reverse-torque conditions

Ah yes,, you are right to ask, 45 k on the crd, u-joints are in perfect order. as are the motor mount/trans mount/ isolators, etc etc: We do not live in the rust belt, so all is easy to check, and I am very much on top of , or under, both my tj, and kj obsessively often. As I do all my own oil/filter changes/lube/ & what ever maintenance is needed I am quite familiar with all that you have mentioned and all is in excellent mechanical order. In fact I just replaced the u-joints on my tj , as I was able to diagnose that they were beginning to run a little on the dry side. You mentioned back torque, does not shudder during any torque event in or out. just during free coasting. hhhhhmmmmmm later-on don, oh spoke to the dealership as well, and I don't trust them any further than I can throw jeeps!

No-load coasting points even more to the u-joints, even d.s. balance - I jacked'n'stacked mine, started the engine, selected DRIVE, wire brushed the spinning d.s., blew off with hp shop air, selected NEUTRAL, brushed\wiped, selected DRIVE, spray-painted while spinning to eliminate any slight out-of-balance possibilities
