not to steer you away from something that may or may not be illegal in canada  i don't know if they are

i'm not 100% sure how a cobra 19 would perform with a linear, you can get a pretty good CB/SSB for the same price of a linear i'd imagine, i paid less than 200 for my galaxy and it's got the cleanest output or recieve of any radio i've ever had, given.. my Texas Ranger i had back in the day was pretty dang good

cb's are similar to car stereos, they perform (generally speaking) equivelently to about how much you paid for them

where'd you mount your 'tenna and what not obi? I had to get my antenna off my back gate, i got tired REAL quick, of listening to the fuel pump :P

I spent about half my drive back home (2hrs) the other week lookin up directions on my GPS for drivers who couldn't find such and such avenue etc

i only turned my pwr over 50% once to tx back to someone i had passed by about 12 miles, I should have asked ohv-kj to give me a guestimate of how hard I was hitting his CB at 50% pwr when I was driving behind him on the highway, it shouldn't have been too bad, my galaxy isn't that tuned up but i've just about matched my tx with my rx to the point where if i hear you i can talk to you, without playin with the squelch

I still plan on gettin a ham licence later in the year

I mounted the antenna with a magnetic base on the roof, its a 2' whip... The cb is wired into the cigarette lighter fuse. Check it out in teh pics section

ya i saw it, looks like a good trail setup long as it doesnt get swiped off the roof, i doubt it will have problems stayin up there minus branches

would look funny, but id bet it would stick to the headliner inside the jeep on the trail and still have the tx/rx for talkin to your buds haha

do you know the watt rating of that 2' mag mount? i wouldnt hook anything up to it other than your cobra, it might spaz

Don't know off the top of my head, when the wife gets back from work i will try to remember... What are the risks of keeping the mag mount on the roof but taking the antenna off, I don't want it there all the time. As far as it coming off I've been warned about that by my local jeep club, but I've been told by others they have never had it happen with there mag mounts, if it is a problem, I will find a better solution, if not, all is well :)

just twisting the antenna from the mount and leaving the mag? long as you don't use the radio with it like that you'd be fine, with the antenna off the mount your SWR would be pegged

but yea, spinning it off the mount is no different than what us guys with the quick disconnects do with our firestiks and wilsons and what not

well, i did chase a friend around the parking lot with mine threatening to wack her legs with it

wait, that doesn't really sound right does it...

oh, only real risks of keeping the mag up there is contact rust if it doesn't have that feltish stuff on the bottom side or some sort of plastic rubber or whatever, and the possibility of collecting paperclips and inkpens and such if you work at an office

once your coworkers realise youve got a magnet on your roof theyre going to start sticking things to it :P

I'm know I'm going to upset some people with this post but I'm going to say it anyway. And this isn't directed at anyone in particular.

It bothers me every time I hear about someone running linear amplifiers or having a "peaked and tuned" CB. Especially when theres comments like they are turning on lights, setting off car alarms of causing interference to other radio and TV signals. If your radio is doing any of these things it means that you are not just transmitting on one CB channel but ALL OVER THE RADIO SPECTRUM. All I'm saying is to think about who your interfering with and what the effects are. Its possable that your "spurious emissions" are intrerfering with police, fire, aviation and shipping. Hospitals use telemetry to monitor patients among other things, yes there is actually a reason for those no cell phone signs in the emergency room. Thares also a reason for those no radio signs around blasting zones.

All I'm saying is lets think about what were doing. If you want to talk around the world, take the ham test and legally run 1000's of watts.

And speaking from experience " It Can Be darn Expensive" to you if you get caught . ( To a tune of 10,000.oo ) fine this was back in 1980 I was monitored in Miami from Orlando off the back of stacked quad Beams with a Drake 10 meter Amp. turned down to 11 meters, had all me stuff taken and only got a mobile back in 1998, so if you feel lucky , go for it , I know I want even put a power mike on a CB from now on.

Ah..Linear's that brings back the memories of my dad. His CB handle was Totempole and good example of why. He took a well borrowed a CB Linear from a Train and modified it and boy when he would key up on the Base Radio my god..it sounded like God was talking to people. He would bleed over the PA systems in town and it drew so much energy that he would actually make the street lights dim everytime he keyed up. Ah my dad was quite a character, in fact he still is. :P 8)

Do i have to worry about the mag mount rusting? perhaps I could put a bit of plastic wrap on the bottom of the mag just to prevent contact rust. There "was" some rubber on the bottom but I removed that... thought it was part of the packaging lmao

I had a old rubber duck mag mount, it had some sort of Felt glued to the bottom, under the felt was some aluminum foil lookin stuff, and er.. under that was a magnet go figure

Some of them are coated in a nonremovable some sorta rubber stuff, if it had rubber on the bottom it was probably the protection pad :P The mount shouldn't rust

if it scratches your roof, that will :P

I haven't put a mag mount antenna on my jeep but had them on previous vehicles. My latest is a Wilson mag mount with 4 ft whip on our minivan (which has a slightly lower roof line then the Jeep). This is a really stout magnet mount and on occasions, I have had it "pop-off" when going into parking garages and it also happened once while going through a town with low laying tree limbs. So, it is definitely possible for the mag mount to get taken off by low branches.

Twisting the antenna off the base mount will not hurt your cb as long as you don't key the mic ( better to not have the radio on at all without the antenna). From my understanding, unless the cb internals have changed, there are finals inside the cb that will get burned up if you key the mic without an antenna (also if SWRs are too high). You may be more susceptible if/when you put a linear in. :D

As for rust, I occasionally relocate the mount so water and dirt don't accumulate under the mount. Just a suggestion.

Tim
