I am installing a set of Rubicon wheels on my Libby. I weighed the tire and rim that will go on the the carrier and is about 22 lbs heavier the stock one. Is the extra weight going to bend or do anything to my tailgate because of the extra weight of the new wheels?

I have had mine on since Nov and no issues.

The tailgate seems very sturdy. I know alot of Wrangler owners have to get a new carrier because their tailgate is smaller and would bend over time. I just wanna make sure that won't happen given the extra 22lbs over stock.

I have BFG 245/75/R16 on the stock Renegade rim (haven't weight the tire/rim) along with a spare tire spacer from rocky road (prob weighs about 3-4lbs on it's own, and allows the tailgate glass to clear the oversized tire). So I am not sure of the total weight but I am sure it is in the same neighborhood as your new set up.

Truck has been this way for about 4 years with no problems, I am actually considering rigging up some way to mount my 48" HL Jack on to the spare tire holder, the only reason I have held off is the concern of adding another 20+lbs to the tailgate/tire holders 4 mounting bolts.

Until recently, I was running a 31" tire on a 15x8 steel whell with a 48" hi lift on my rear spare tire holder. I never had a single issue. I was just careful with the gate. I never let it swing on its own, and never slammed it. I also never just left it hanging open. Got what I needed and closed it.

I checked out some of your pics, and I see you had the HL Jack mounted horizontaly, which is what I was planning on doing so that you can still open the tailgate window with the tailgate closed. Do you have any pictures that show how you mounted it to the spare tire holder?

I was thinking two bolts with a couple BF'n wing nuts.

I have had the MTR 245/75/16 and Moab wheel on the back of mine since Summer 2005. No issues. (and it got hit by a car)

My High Lift mount is the most expensive, elaborate, and custom designed thing I have ever done!!!...................or.............NOT!..... ...lol!!! All I did was was get some 3/8's hook bolts, washers, and wingnuts. Then, just hooked them to the inside of the wheel spokes and tightened the wingnuts down real tight. I suspect, this would work on just about any spare tire. It's a great, non permanent mounting solution to this age old problem. Easy on, easy off........cheap, and no tools required. I can't believe I never thought of it before. I'll have pics shortly.
