This isnt' my jeep, it is a friend's he got his Jeep stuck in some snow up north and after getting pulled out it won't switch out of 4 wheel low. He says the light for the ESP "Off" is always lit in the gauge cluster and when attempting to switch to 4 wheel hi or 2 wheel, the indicator light blinks but then nothing happens. He was planning on driving home this afternoon but I obviously advised him against taking the Jeep on the highway, or any roads for that matter in 4 wheel hi. I've googled a bunch and found a few posts of people with similar problems but so far have found no solutions. I had him disconnect the battery for a few minutes to see if it was an ECU problem, but that didn't help. Any thoughts??

Did he put it in Neutral before shifting out of 4-low. I don't know if it will switch easily unless he drops it in neutral and then flips the switch.

I had this happen to me when I got stuck in the snow, i think i overheated the transfer case or something. Mine fixed itself after shutting it off and letting it cool down a bit. Has he tried putting the transfer case in neutral? ... might help but not sure.

Thanks for the replies guys! I'm not sure what he did but something worked. He's not too mechanically inclined so I wouldn't put it past him if he didn't have it in neutral, but it may have been overheating as well because he left it alone for a while before trying again. Once he gets back into town I'm going to take a look at it, and if I come up with anything of value I'll make sure to post it on here. Thanks again!

sounds like heat. Remember that our T cases are filled with ATF +4.... If he was just sitting there spinning his tires, he could have hit the thermal switch since their wasn't any air flow across the t case.... Or didn't have it in neutral :D

Oh hear comes the electric shift problems,a very common problem with GM vehicles with electric shift t-cases.You may have fried to electric motor that shifts the t-case.Have it towed to a dealership and let warranty take care of it.

Are there any known ways to help improve this ?

no not really. For one, it's best to know when to stop. If you haven't moved with in the first 2 minutes of ditching your self, just stop and wait for a tug. Using a different synthetic in the tcase may help, but it won't work a miracle in a case like this. I have been on quite a few trails with my KK and have never had a problem with over heating even after 3 miles of constant 4 low while climbing a pretty good grade

I think if you are moving in 4 low and not speeding you should be good.
But I might be wrong...

speeding or not speeding, It has to do with air flow. Even if you were speeding in 4low and did get the oil hot, the chances of over heating are lower than sitting there and just spinning. Also, if ditched in snow, you are going to create an air pocket under the jeep that is going to be heated by the exhaust
