I changed my oil today in the jeep, and went to fill it back up, and i noticed under the cap there was some splatters stuck on the bottom which looked like rust? it was only on half the cap too, but i think that it is caused by the D shape of the filler neck on the motor. anyway. it is dried right on there and i could hardly smear it with my finger. There was also a bit of clear "condensation looking" fluid droplets on that area which kinda smelled funny too, almost like gas. some how what ever that doo doo is it was forced back up the filler neck. ohh yeah it is an 05 will 10kmi.

what the hell is that?

First, that is not rust.

The top of the oil filer neck is a funny place. Assuming that the '05 is setup the same way as my '02: You have 2 things happening to cause the condensation.

1) The Oil filler neck is the highest point in the motor. Most of the oil vapor acumulates here (above the PCV) the vapor is returned to a liquid form of oil on the top of the cap where it turns into a thin film. This vapor can consist of more than just oil. Any water vapor that develops in your oil will also collect here and thus the ugly film.

2) The PCV valve is also right here collecting gases from the crankcase (to be feed back into the intake.) However, not all of the gases are collected and recirculated in the intake track. The problem here is that the PCV is connected lower on the fill tube so not all of the vapor can be collected.

Now, this is my take on it... I don't recall any TSB's or recalls about it so that is my answer and I am sticking to it. BTW: my Liberty has over 40K miles on it now. I have the same crud on the oil cap and haven't had any problems.

46k on mine, same gunk.

Slightly on topic: Went to my Jeep dlr today for oil/filter (I know, but it's free so I'm not crawlin under) and he has this sign outside "Express Oil Change - No Aptt Needed". Ok, I bought the Jeep there and have lifetime oil/filter. It still takes them over 2 hrs to do the job!
