Think I'm kidding? Ask why our CRDs are HEAVIER than a 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee that has twice the cylinders, another 18 inches of body length, 6 inches more width, and 2-3 inches of height?

I was reading in a book yesterday (totally unrelated to cars) about building a sound-proof recording studio in a semi-trailer. They suggested using 1/4 thick sheets of LEAD for soundproofing.
Considering how heavy the CRD Liberty is, and how much quieter inside it is than my 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee... Hmm. Makes ya wonder what the body is lined with.

Or do they assume those in the sound studio won't eat the lead?

My CRD is much quieter at highway speeds than the Ford Escape I rented for the last job I went to. Going slow the Escape was quieter, over 35MPH the road noise and tire noise was so loud I could not hear any one else talk.

As it happens, the studio design is that you use the sheets of lead within a "sandwich" of plywood, crappy OSB, and some polished expensive stuff for the visible surfaces. The floor gets the 1/4" sheets, the walls get 1/8".

I guess they figure that musicians are smart enough to avoid the temptation to lick the walls. :lol:

For the person who thought the Jeep GC was built as cheap as possible... And you think the Liberty had more money spent on it? HAH! 210,000 miles currently on the V8, and while I have a laundry list of things that have had to be replaced... The crap design problems are in BOTH vehicles. Mopar built them as cheap as they could. I'm not sure where the GC was actually assembled, but the USA factory and quality labor is one thing that I CREDIT for the highway quiet inside both my family's Mercury Mariner Hybrids and my CRD. The GC... Is like that rental Escape Warp mentions.

Must be in the poor engineering then. Gotta blame something. I once had an Isuzu P'up that had over 160K miles on it and didn't use or drip any oil. Only thing was the frame was gone from the axle back. The bumper fell off.

They already have tourbo diesels that get over 60 MPG. There was an article posted here over a year ago of a London to Berlin (I think that was the route) Patriot and a Compass. 2 passengers and lugage in mixed driving.
