 Post subject: any alternative to a new trans?

Please tell me somebody knows a fix that doesn't involve a new transmission - the warning light came on climbing a hill, seemed to be stuck in high gear, wouldn't downshift. Even on a flat road it was real s - l - o - w starting from a stop. This morning the light went off and everything seemed normal. 3 codes were in the computer: transmission failure, high temp and torque converter failure (I think I got them right). Apparently for now it's intermittent, warning light came on a couple weeks ago climbing the same hill. Mechanic says it needs a new transmission. Any other ideas to try first?

Hmm you got a '02 which is the beeifer tranny.

You can try adding some Lucas Trasmission additive which helps with cooling and slips. You may also want to consider a fluid flush and filter replacement.

Do you got the HD cooling? What type of hill is it, how fast you going?

My '04 tranny the lighter duty will overheat going high elevation in the mnts usually below 15mph. My solution has been to keep it in a gear instead of it trying to pick the best gear.

Get a full fluid flush. Usually runs about $100. I have seen it work on other trannies that have been cooked.

I live in the mountains and drive up and down almost daily. I was climbing over a summit at 8900 ft .

Thanks, just talked to my mechanic, fluid and filter were done not long ago and they are fine. I drive about 500-100 miles a week, so it is serviced once or more a month, and always ahead of the recommended. Just shy of 110,000, and I have driven it pretty hard. I might try the additive though to try and baby it along while I save up some $. I guess this will keep me on road vs off road for a while.

Man, I hate to say it, but 110K seems like the magic number w/ Chrysler trannies. Our Dodge minivan (with a transmission very similar to the '02 KJ) went kerplooie at just under 110K.

I'm not saying that every Chrysler transmission is going to go belly up at the same time--I'm sure that the majority will last a lot longer--but I've heard DC critics say that you shouldn't expect your transmission to last longer than 110K miles.

I've had mine for over 4 years and I've only put 37K miles on it, so I hope I won't have to worry about it for a while...

Get it looked at by a good transmission shop. If it's bad, talk to APS Precision about building you a better transmission. You have a core to send them. I love the torque converter I got from them for my 45RFE. I'm going to get the shift kit for it next.

The engine light is on and it's shifting funny? Well before giving your tranny it's last rites have a shop run diagnostics on it, more than likely your output speed sensor or input speed sensor has gone out. If that's not the case then you probally have a solinoid and transducer going out. I see more of the speed senors going before then solinoids and such go. I work in a stealership and I see more grands and wranglers in a day than I see KJ's so I wouldn't think the worst just yet

:lol: so, once I get that bad boy out, do I UPS it, or drop it at the post office? My own packaging? just kidding............sending out not an option, ability and only vehicle are a problem.

Diagnostics were ran, there is a problem. First quote was over 3000, waiting for the others. Anybody know the price of the actual part? Same hill today, leaving it in Drive, not down shifting manually, or flooring the gas, just putt putting up the mountain there was no problem. Maybe I'll just start driving now like the little old lady that I will be someday.

We just happened to price out a Liberty tranny today I forget what year but it was around 3800 for a Mopar reman.

P.S. That is just the price for part. Labor on that according to the motors book is 5 hours, and most shop rates are between 80 and 120 bucks an hour.
