cold weather ccv filter

Shortly after I purchased my Jeep I installed a Provent on it. Great product, until it hits -30C then the water vapours trapped in it freeze the filter media solid causing the hoses to blow off or worse(engine seals) I decided to remove it and design my own less restrictive filter, borrowing a few ideas from this forum. Pictured below is the filter canister and some of the plumbing parts I used. The filter body has a SS 40 micron screen in it; installed on its own it stops very little. I packed it tight with SS scrub pads. This took out a great deal more, but I was still getting oil in the turbo, so I added a second filter in series below the filter box and once again packed it tight with ss scrub pads, because of its location it has a cooling/condensing effect on the rest of the vapours and filters it all out. After one of the coldest winters in 30 years and 6000 miles I am more than pleased. Try it, you will like it! P.S. I have a lightly used Provent if anyone is interested

EHM works as well, but also comes with the rustproofing package.

The Provent has a pop off valve. Did it not work?

Ice can do all kinds of strange things.

What about putting an insulation jacket around the Provent to prevent it from icing up?

I have been looking for an oil catch can myself and found this and many more on ebay. I'm just wondering if it would work or not.

I have mine on for over a year and last winter was kinda cold. Well below zero many nights. I had no problems. Did the pop off valve not work??

The pop valve froze up and the drain line as well. The problem is when the engine is hot and shut off, the water vapours freeze on the filter element restricting it completely. Several times I took the top off and it was iced up. Also the drain line would freeze causing a backup making things worse. The drain line on this new design tends to freeze up as well, but I increased its size from 3/8 to 1/2" and ran it closer to the engine to pick up some heat. I am not knocking the product, it just works to well for the climate up here. PS The provent is sold.

Yes and I am looking forward to it. I have an idea on the install already. It gets cold where I live but not that often and not as cold as Canada. In the winter I may have to go back to the EHM, but the provent will be nice!!!

To small for the job, 3/8" input and output. ccv on engine is 3/4"

Could this oil catch can be used at the end of the elephant hose? I contacted them and he said they could put straight 3/4 fittings to except the hose but not the ninety degree fittings. Will this eliminate the smell associated with the EHM mod?

I don't believe there is anything in the can. It's just a catch can.

It will do very little if the can is empty, spend a few extra bucks and buy a Provent, it is very well made, and does an excellent job of filtering the oil out.

Ok, I'm confused now. I thought the idea of the EHM was to just drain the vented oil. I don't want the oil dripping out of the hose onto my garage floor and driveway so couldn't this be used to catch the excess oil? I would plug one fitting and have the EHM hose connect to the other and it would vent through the filter on top. I don't plan on utilizing this like you would a provent install. I just want to catch the excess oil. Am I understanding correctly that the provent actually acts as an in-line filter before the intercooler? The provent costs twice as much as this catch can. If you shop around you can find this can for about $60.

IMO if there is no filter media to condense the vapours, you will still get oil shooting out the end of the pipe. check other posts people have used everything from Coke bottles to PVC conduit for there catch cans. my design cost $22.63 to build. I have tried several variations, this unit does what I want it to.
