If I may stir the pot a little.....

If you want a high quality Group IV PAO oil like Mobil Delvac 1 or Amsoil... then you might consider Schaeffer 9000. It is a darn good oil that has shown excellent results in my CRD and the Cummins ISX in my semi. The wear metals have been lower than with Amsoil (which I used to use) and the TBN holds up better. At 30K miles in my Semi, with Amsoil the Iron was 70 ppm and with Schaeffer it was 46 ppm. The TBN of the Amsoil had dropped to 7.4 and the Schaeffer had only dropped to 8.5. Copper, lead, chromium, etc all were lower with the Schaeffer. My mpg went up in the Cummins by .3 mpg compared to Amsoil. Not much to some, but that is nearly $2000 a year in fuel savings to me.

Now that being said, Schaeffer has been making lube products longer than anyone else in the country... since 1834. And I can get this stuff delivered to my door for a whopping $19 a gallon. I do buy in larger quantities, but the price is still better by the case delivered than Amsoil or Mobil. As best I can tell, this oil was also the first in the U.S. to be certified for all the latest VW and MB standards, if that means anything to some.

Since some, and rightly so, are serious about running good synthetics in the CRD, and you want to save some cash, you might consider Schaeffer.

The spec sheet on Schaeffer 9000 is here:

http://www.schaefferoil.com/datapdf/9000.pdf

You would have to go thru a Schaeffer dealer to get it. There is a list of dealers on the site. I use Mark at http://www.specializedlubricants.net/

Usually, you would have to order more than $350 worth of product to qualify for free shipping. Mark has a deal going on (last I checked) for two cases shipped free anywhere. Check with him for details.

Joe, if you're a whiskey fan, you've coming to the whiskey capitol of the world. You'll be about an hour or so from the Jack Daniels distillery and up in Kentucky, all the worlds burbon is made.

I'd be most interested in Jim Beam rather than Jack D. IMO Jack D is way overrated! At least their normal whisky is, I haven't tried the single barrel or others :)

A bottle of Jim Beam is always welcome in my whisky cabinet though - lovely when mixed with coca cola.

Hell I'll have one right away! Cheers!

I don't drink whiskey, but love a steak, salmon, or chicken that has been marinated in it.
My wife also makes a great cake that uses Bourbon (Whiskey) and black walnuts.

Well, I really like the direction this thread has taken. I'll take a large tumbler of Zacapa Centenario 23 year old rum over a glass of synthetic lube any day of the week. Image

You should try some JD in your diesel as an additive, the alcohol will assist in cleaning the injectors and keep the pump well lubed

If you want to go that puristic route, you'd better not cool whisky at all. You should buy a proper whisky drinking glass and warm the whisky to body temperature before drinking it, it will taste of more, trust me.

And don't buy a whisky which isn't Cask strength (>55%) at all ;)

I like my blended whiskies with coca cola, and my single malts at body temperature in a proper glass :)

Notice the shape of the glass, it will fit neatly in your palm between your fingers to absorb most possible heat from your hands. At the mouth of the glass it narrows in to concentrate the flower of the whisky when you nose it.

You misunderstood, my semi engine (which I did the comparative testing) is at 419,000 miles. I said I tested the oil that had been in the engine for 30K miles. Big difference! I did tests on Amsoil at 15K and 30K. I did tests on the Schaeffer at same intervals. The Schaeffer held up better with lower wear metals showing. I was running bypass filtration on both oils as well.

I got over 50K miles on the CRD. It was on the Amsoil until I switched out the Semi to Schaeffer. At last change, I put Schaeffer in the Jeep, but have not had enough time on it to do a UOA yet.
