Dude, I'm glad you got hit by one of the better (more considerate) crooks. cause most folks don't carry a zero$ deductable and minor damage like that makes for aggrevation and grocery money.

On my truck, I just put a little black silicon over that area and pressed on.

I'm sorry if I offend anyone but I had my jeep broken in to and while it wasn't stolen they took items out of it. My thought is screw the rope; forget the shotgun find the SOB that did it. Shoot him/her (must be politically correct) in the leg with a 22 (this is so he/she can’t run but will not die from this injury) hit the other leg with a baseball bat at the knee repeatedly until the knee is broken. Stick broken door handle in his mouth because at this point his screams are getting annoying. Proceed to move on to their arms, a nice hammer will work a single hit to both elbows. Now for the fun part make a sign that states what this fine individual did and take him back to his buddies (you did get this information before you put the door handle in right?) with the sign. Finally as your leaving shoot the SOB in the head.

I see your from newark but in ohio. If it's anything like the newark in NJ I know where you get a idea like this.

Nice............
Allthough I do love the "steakhouse" image!!

Read an article a while back where one of those armored car building companies installed a poison gas squirter INSIDE the car. if someone tried to steal it they got a piercing alarm. If that didn't cause them to bail, the gas went off killing them! Big legal fight over the installation........... Don't know whatever happened with it legal wise.

Myke,
Newark Ohio is a very nice place, with the excecption of no jeep trails :( . It's just like Corwyyn said "Sick? No. Fed up with the modern penal system? Yes." I've been working retail and people would steal all the time. The worst was Houston TX robbed at gun point 3 times in the first 5 months the store was open.

You can thank the keyfob for that. The keyfob has integrated transceiver which you need for the engine to continue to operate for more than 5 (or is it 10?) seconds.

This is new for 05+ models.

I have a 2002 and it has the same thing. I had a key made for it at a hardware store (bought used, only came with one key) and when I started the car with it, it ran for like 2 or 3 seconds and then cut off. At first I thought I royally screwed up the ignition or something. Then I found out that the key has a chip in it and the car will automatically turn off after a few seconds if the key you are using does not have the chip.

Our Saab (and previous Toyota) had the same thing. It's a good way for the dealerships to make money. Since you have to get a spare key made there, they can charge whatever they want. I think they charged me like $35. Toyta key was like $60.

You can see under the handle near the door lock where they used the screwdriver to open the door. There is a little bit of a dent

So what exactly do they do? Pop the entire door handle off? how does that do anything?

When you take of the door handle of...or pry it open as in this case.....it exposes the inner working of the locking mechanism AND the door securing mechanism (the working parts when you pull the door handle)....most cars only allow a small space to open up when this is done (so most car thieves are acustomed to working through small openings) however the KJ allows a big space up to a couple of inches. So the criminal can expose and manipulate the the locking parts. The same way a tow truck driver would unlock your door by sliding a slim jim down through your window seal to unlock your car when you've locked your keys in it...only difference is the criminal just does it faster by wrecking things.

Those pictures make my blood boil. That's it. I'm getting the flame throwers and the shocking steering wheel club. Then I'm going to spring-load a ball peen hammer to the headliner and wire it up to the Vehicle Immobilization Device. If the motor cuts off, so do you. BOOOIIIING *SPLAT*

I should get some seat covers.

Anyone rekon the Wet Okole covers "waterproof" claim includes blood and brain?

Does the slim jim work on the libby? If it does then that really stupid. All it takes is a plastic tube around the lock and it cant get ahold of it. Why havent they fixed such a small problem?

That really pi@#es me off. I had an Acura Integra GSR and one day I came out to go to work and it was up on blocks. They couldn't steal it because of the chipped keys so they opened it stole all 4 tires and the front seats and the top of the arm console. Along with all the CD's, some cheap sunglasses and all the change out of my change(ash) tray. Luckily my insurance company worked well with me and I didn't have to dish out the approx. $9,000 in repairs. Of course after this I read that Integras are one of the most thefted cars in the nation. They go around and steal Integra parts and put them on their Honda Civics, even the performance engine parts. I took it to the dealer and they said I was lucky. They showed me another Integra that had everything taken out including the carpet from the trunk. It was stripped all the way to the metal shell. When I got my car back I was immediately traded in. Theives really bite and they are everywhere. I'd be for all the suggestions on criminal punishment if I found out who did it.

Reny363,

Not bad door damage, you had a good guy.

Jeepjeepster,

Screwdriver is cheaper than a slim jim. Yeah the car industry could stop this kinda break-in

I personally think they conspired with the insurance industry to figure out what mode of entry would cause the least amount of damage. Myself I'd rather have a busted window.

I relly on deceptions and deterents:

Better to put it centered under the front seat so it comes up and around!

Yes it does...I have seen it done...it does take awhile though. These guys probably used a screwdriver by the looks of the damage...one tool for everything. They were probably however in a good position though....being that a screwdriver would take a period time to work at everything. It was night time so they had the luxury of darkness and time to cover their job.

This problem (as with most vehicles) is NOT a high priority concern (globally) amongst their target sales groups....it has not been a question asked frequently enough and it has not been reported frequently enough by law enforcement to become an issue. In my time I have only seen two Libertys broken into....this one....and one about a year ago.....its just not a hot ticket item for these little clowns.

Do you like snakes? Get a couple Cobras and place them in your KJ at night or when you will be away for awhile. Put up a sign and say you have a Cobra anti-theft system. They might think of the company and think it is an easy break in, but in truth, it is a deadly bite that will stop them.

Just remember to bag the boys when you plan to get in, yourself, or build up an immunity to their venom.
