Well towstrap rolled his 02 gas liberty, and totaled it this past weekend and was thinking about a CRD liberty, better fuel economy, more torqe!! I wasn't sure if there is any known problem's or things he should be lookning out for! any thoughts or advise would be greatly appreciated !! :wink: :wink:

I think there is a sticky thread dedicated to this in the tech section, but here are some basics:

1) Circumvent the EGR (unplug MAF, instal SEGR, or get GDE tune... whatever works).
2) Install Provent CCV or EHM

Once you get around those two EPA (Engine Problem Association) items, you are pretty well good to go.

Factory-installed problems with KJ CRD -

- lower ball joints - 1,000,000-mile Diesel engine, with replaceable cylinder sleeves like the big boys, is way too heavy for the DCJ-opted 4-cyl ball joints - solution: replace with the originally spec'ed MOOG Part # K3199 {Ball Joint}, V8-rated parts - diy 87bucks and yer good to go.......

- emissions - all 1500-series trucks and passenger vehicles are required to meet all emissions standards for lite-duty vehicles - 4-cyl engines "breathe" harder than 6's and 8's, resulting in much more 'blow-by' type vapors exiting the crankcase - these excessive oil vapors are plumbed back into the intake system via the turbocharger inlet, resulting in excessively oily intake tract, incl the charge-air cooler, resulting in big mess in the intake manifold with EGR-contributed soot - solution: aftermarket emissions-approved oil vapor-trap, with drain plumbed back into the oil pan - diy 135bucks and yer good to go..........

EGR valve - uses an intelligent(?) water-cooled EGR system to maintain charge-air cooled air density - needs good hard runs at hiway speeds to clear out the soot, or valve becomes 'sticky', sluggish, inoperative - premium-brand ULSD fuel and premium ashless motor oil reduces the soot-caking problem - an alternate acceptable solution is available: diy 90bucks and yer good to go..............

- exhaust restriction - 2.5" exhaust piping, good for the 2.8L TD engine, soot-trap (needs regular runs at hiway speeds to cremate the trapped soot and blow it out, no problem), but totally stifled with that huge 35 gallon barrel of a muffler, choked way down internally just inside the inlet for a standard 2.5L 4-cyl gasser (patooie!) engine - solution: aftermarket 2.5" clear thru muffler frees up the little CRD engine so it can take full advantage of the turbo - diy ~100bucks and yer good to go..............

- transmission - DCJ opted for a cheap hi-stall torque convertor with a plastic stator, good for the bottom line, bad for a hi-torque turbocharged Diesel engine, particularly bad for a 4-cyl turbocharged Diesel engine, with only 2 violent combustion thrusts on the crank per revolution - a 6-cyl has three per, an 8-cyl has four per, distributing the forces more evenly per arc - hi-stall results in mushy driving experience: the little mule responds like it is in a mud pit - solution: aftermarket low-stall torque convertor with aluminum stator, vastly improving power-transfer efficiency for improved driveability - diy 750bucks incl shift kit and yer good to go.............

- fuel supply system - some problems with excessively aerated fuel, caused by using pressure fittings in a vacuum system, and locating the fuel manager head higher than the fuel tank, higher even than the CP3 injection pump - air in a liquid piping system will always collect at the highest point in the system - this results in starting problems and misfiring\hesitation, and possibility of excessive heat damage to the fuel heater in the fuel manager head
- solution A - replace the plastic fuel fittings at the fuel tank with clamped rubber hose to eliminate the inherent leaks due to using those pressure-type fittings in vacuum service - diy ~ 10bucks and yer good to go........
- solution B - install the fuel lift pump module used in the Dodge Cummins trucks, designed for the same CP3 CRD system as in the Jeep - DCJ provided everything, already installed in the Jeep, but fergot to install the in-tank pump - diy 175bucks and yer good to go........

Add 1oz\gal ashless or syn 2-stroke motor oil to the ULSD fuel to protect the CRD Inj Pump and injectors, and yer good to go..........

These relatively minor fixes will give you the CRD Jeep the engineers wanted you to have - you got the Jeep the bean-counters tricked-out for you - a little effort and elbow grease on your part, and the little mule won't continually respond like it was rode hard and put up wet.

And remember: the Jeep Liberty CRD KJ requires Diesel Fuel, not gas - it has a fuel tank, not a gas tank - you look at the fuel guage, not the gas guage - you stop at the fuel station, not the gas station - you fill up at the fuel pump, not the gas pump - you remove the the fuel cap, not the gas cap - green handle, not black handle - you pay for fuel, not gas - your KJ gets fuel mileage, not gas mileage - it gets fuel economy, not gas economy - it may need fuel additives, not gasoline additives - fuel is Cetane-rated, opposite of and not Octane-rated - you step on the accelerator pedal, not the gas pedal - the fuel filter needs changing, not the gas filter - you then may have a fuel leak, not a gas leak - the odor is of fuel, not gas - you may have gotten a tank of bad fuel, not bad gas - fuel, not gas - and last, but not least, that rumbling in yer tummy is gas, and not Diesel fuel (hopefully!) - that odor is of gas, and not f...never mind! - keep those things in mind, and you won't be back on here in a few days\weeks, with an upset stomach and wailing because you filled the fuel tank with gasoline instead of Diesel fuel - and tried blaming it on your wife!

Word up, eh..........

One final solution: free subscription to the LostKJs.com forum - diy, priceless, and you'll always be good to go.........

MAN !! look's like the CRD is a little on the high maintance/ need's tweeked side !! Towstrap is wanting somthing reliable and not in need of reengineering, I think he will prob. stick with the 3.7 gas !! :roll: :roll: :roll:

Good idea :lol: The CRD was a DC marketing test of how diesels would sell in the US. The test was a sucess but the bean counters had free reign and the patient died :oops: There are some problems but they can be overcome. Additionally some owners never experience any problems at all but most of those are not LOST memers. We love our diesels and strive to improve on the weak areas.

Now on my last highway trip I got 28.499 MPG going by the odometer that is supposably 10% low. Calculate that out and you'll see something over 31 MPG :shock: Do that on a V6 :lol:

I second what Joe just said. Look at the engine problems that I have had, then counter that with the knowledge that I will be rebuilding the damaged motor and stuffing it into my 97 Grand Cherokee that is lucky to find 14mpg on a sign, cuz it sure isn't in the v8 engine.

The CRD is a solid beast that was crippled by the beancounters. Invest a little bit in mods to un-fook the stuff that Mopar fooked, and you will have something nobody else has: A midsize SUV that finds gas mileage that even hybrid SUVs (The Mercury Mariner) struggle to get... And towing ability to move small buildings.

Mine has been awesome. I had to replace the EGR at 60K miles, the condenser fan and and two turbo hoses. I've done none of the modifications listed. I've driven my KJ in every Rocky Mountain state (on and off road) from high altitude to desert to the swamps of FL.

I bought it used at 16K miles and in it's previous like, it was a rental so you know it was thrashed before I got it.

When I was in the market for a KJ, I looked for 3 mos before I found this one. I would not have bought a gasser.

Keep up with the regularly scheduled maintenance and there's no problem. Don't put fuel into the tank that's not supposed to go in there and no problem. Don't mess with it trying to make it better and no problem.

I'm going to finish prepping for my new slider install. Big trip to MOAB on Thursday!

Have your friend PM me about my experiences. My brothers on the CRD Forum can be a bit negative at times. :D

I love my CRD so far. However, I think that it is for someone who is inherently "interested" in their vehicle - tinkering to make it better, etc. It is not a vehicle for those who simply want to fill it up and go. In that case, you run into the only real negative that I can tell: if something major and catastrophic happens to it (i.e., geordi's experience) it is very difficult to locate someone who knows it and can perform necessary repairs. On the bright side, if you're mechanically inclined, there is more knowledge on this board than you will ever be able to amass in a whole region of dealerships. You just have to turn the wrench yourself.

As far as DCX's little experiment with the KJ CRD, they were unsuccessful penetrating the market that I think they wanted - people who wanted Cute-utes and wanted good fuel mileage yet were clueless as a car buyer - they wanted to get the RAV-4 and CR-V crowd into a Liberty. IMHO, most "strategy" of American carmakers for the last 15 years has been to try to get momentum, rather than to just engineer and market vehicles that people wanted. You ever watch your favorite football team, and you can tell that they are getting beat because they are trying to play the game rather than just playing football? Yeah, like that. *Sorry, that was a rant.*

However, the market they did penetrate (accidentally) are those that have gravitated to the CRD as something that potentially could have been lightning in a bottle. They see the potential of a high-torque, high-mpg, off-road capable vehicle and embrace it regardless of engineering difficulties, because all of those can be overcome. If you end up getting a CRD, I don't think you'll be disappointed - because you had the wherewithal to research it a little beforehand, you have the wherewithal to enjoy it.

Sorry if that sounded preachy - it's Sunday and I get kind of philosophical on Sundays.

I didn't mean to offend anyone !! I am a GM mechanic and know the Duramax diesel well, I personally like diesel's I know some make's and manufacture's have problem's with some and some don't ! I get what you all are saying about a few mod's to uncork the CRD it will run like a scalded dog, but I think Towstrap is looking at how much money will it take to keep up a diesel and if there is some reason other than emissions that Jeep stop makeing the CRD !!

I would never have bought a liberty if it was not for the diesel.

I am coming from a Toyota, and the liberty build quality, is not so good.

If it was not for Lost i would have gone back to Toyota. I LOVE the diesel, but the interior squeaks and rattles are annoying.

The engine is excellent, the trans is excellent, the trans programming is not so good.

You can do everything there is to do to a crd and still shudder all day long, that's kind of annoying.

There are, however, a lot of people who are in stock form and knock down 28+ mpg and just change the oil. I'm not one of those people.

Honestly I don't particularly care for jeep in general, much less a liberty, BUT you can not deny the on road mpg and offroad capability for a midsized suv. It handles well, and has towing capability to spare.

The liberty crd has to be the most capable vehicle out there.
But if they (toyota) sold a hilux or even put a td in the FJ, i would not be here, typing this.

Maybe so but they planned on selling 5000 and as I recall they sold 11,000 05's and a undertermined amount of 06. And that was with NO ADVERTISING AT ALL :shock: Even diesel fans don't know they were availble here :roll:

Oil, filters. That's all the maintenance mine has asked for.

I unplugged the MAF and did the EHM just cuz I'm cool like that.

almost 100% of my problems are self inflicted. If i didn't mess with it it would have been fine. Thats not how i roll though. I like to mess with things.
