My 06 CRD has a peculiar shudder when I accelerate from 50-55 to 65 or so. Feels like driving on a freeway rumble strip. Intensity increases the harder I push the vehicle. Thought I'd try to take advantage of the experts on this site.

Another CRD owner suggested it was a transmission oddity created by the weak stock TC. The local dealer service department said they never heard of a transmission problem with this description with this vehicle.

I did see a post on this site refering to a "shudder" attributed to the turbo (can't remember who posted it) and I do have an peculiar (I think engine compartment) noise that comes after some normal upshifts when the engine rpms decrease for the next gear. It's kind of a shooshing sound followed by something similar to two metal plates loosly spinning together. (I'm making it sound like my turbo's failing but it doesn't happen all the time, can be subtle, and I have heard similar in some of the pickups or semis I've driven.)

The Liberty drives great and hauls with the INMOTION tune. Now has 47400 miles on it.

I very much appreciate this site and the discussions. All of my vehicles (3) are diesels, but I'm not a mechanic. Enjoy working on them though.

Thanks for any info.

Shutter is the closable panel on either side of a window, or the movable exposure cover on a camera lens, etc, from the verb 'to shut' or close - try looking up shudder, vibration, etc - many posts here on that normally abnormal shudder in this chassis - most DCJ dealership personnel cannot even spell Diesel, thus are little help when confronted by one........

The phenomenon you are describing is exactly the torque converter shudder. This issue isn't so much the lock up clutch in the converter slipping but the springs in the damper bottoming out. This is because the increased torque in that specific RPM range results in increased torsional vibrations which excite the springs in the converter.

I would venture a guess that if you tried the same maneuver in your IM equipped vehicle at, say, 2200rpm or above that it won't shudder.

This is the #1 problem with IM tunes... a better TC (i.e. Suncoast) will fix the issue, but it's going to cost $$$$

Not necessarily - some with oem shudder report continuing shudder after Suncoast upgrade - so far, there is no positive indication that the 11\05 modification to upgrade the damper in the KJ TCC actually solved the problem, tho it did appear to resolve the disintegration problem.............

I think if you do enough "searching" here you'll find that some with the Suncoast TC and IM tune still have the problem  Further reading will reveal that at least one (maybe more) have cured it with the GDE tune  Also so far there has been no complaints of shuddering with the GDE tune 8)

I think if you stay tuned there will be an announcment for a for a Torque Converter designed for our CRD's  Currently we have a choice between a plastic whimp and a 400 HP drag racing one. Neither are a decent fit for our four cylinder tractors

mt experience... never had a shudder stock or with the suncoast... add an inmotion with the suncoast i get the shudder... not particularly worried about it though... as long as you don't mash on it in that range it won't shudder... and you can still get excellent acceleration out of it

Right - same here, but no shudder after IM - I always check the year model when reading shudder threads, but only way to confirm the relationship would be for each shuddering poster to list DOB and positive negation or affirmation of upgrade from oem factory TC to the 11\05 TC - 01\06 and later '06's should all have the upgraded oem version

The upgraded front pump is the original front pump with the seal collar machined off the front casting - only resulted difference is in the sealing method - original takes 3 seals, modified takes two seals - pump castings and internals are identical, so if there is no ATF-4 dripping on the ground from the front where the 545RFE bolts to the engine, you're good to go...........................

mine does the stalling thing though... every now and again but ya can tell it is from the trans... i don't like autos so much right now... 2 vehicles with them ... 2 vehicles with rebuilds

It's mainly the TCM trying to compensate for the 4cyl Diesel engine - the trans works well in the 4.7L GC, the 5.7L Hemi Ram, the Cummins Ram
