I just discovered that caterpillar seems to make an oil filter adaptable for our truck, a cat 7W2327. The only difference is: the filter media, 21 microns instead of 20, the bypass is 7to 9psi instead of 8 to 11. It is also a bit bigger. The threads and the seal seems to fit perfectly. I will run and try one asap. Cat also appears to sell all the oil for our rig. Syn 5w40 and 75w140. Looks like a one stop shop for me. So far, fuel filter, oil filter and battery. Another future product would be to find an air filter to fit on our rigs from cat.

Maybe you should have bought a Cat..... Oh wait they quit making over the road engines... for good reason. Their filters and oil are top notch.

Does it have a larger capacity or what? In my experience, Cat filters don't come cheap.

It is $10.00 at the above link. That is much cheaper than $40 for the stock, assuming it is a compatible filter.

Oh so there is something that I talk about in the CRD section

Ok so the 7w2326 and 7w2327 are 3/4th X 16tpi

all cat oils that you buy are either made by shell or mobil, but be ready to die when you see the price. Out here, a gaool of syn 5w40 was 38.97( My cost)

the 2326 is about a half gallon and the 2327 is about a quarter gallon

The 7w2326 is rated at 25 microns compare to 21 for the 7w2327 and wix 51516 which is the recommended filter for our rig. So far in Montreal, caterpillar has decent quality/price. A 1R0750 filter goes for 15$ can. The cheap (quality, not price) jeep filter goes for 55$. I also found a filter that I think would fit for the cat fuel filter mod with a water separator drain: Cat 175-2949. It's rated at 3 microns and the gasket is a bit bigger but it should fit.

I usually wait for Napa's twice a year 1/2 price filter sale. I pick up 3-4 fuel filters + oil and air filters for both my vehicles. It only costs $14 for the wix fuel filter.

This is another interesting alternative:

http://www.microgreenfilter.com/

It contains a small bypass oil filter path in addition to the main filtration media. While not as effective as a true bypass filter setup, you sure can't beat the ease of installation. :)

Just purchased the cat filter, I compared it to a wix and it is much bigger, looks more sturdy and is better built. If it can last for 500hrs on a backhoe, I think it should last 10000km (about 250 hrs) without a problem on my kj. The seal seems to match almost perfectly. Just have to install it now in 700km.

I have used different filters on my crd and the best is Trasko filter, it is double filter and it goes down to 1 micron.

very happy with it.

Is this a direct fit to the factory head?

Haven't put it on yet but it should be. Same thread, same gasket (to a few thou), should fit without a doubt. I'll install it next week. I was using a wix filter every 5000km (one half way through the life oil) and I'm confident this one will make it through the full 10000km.

Just installed the cat 7w2327, with a bit of artwork. The seal fit perfectly but the problem is the flange. The case of the filter is much bigger than the oem and rub on the top part of the flange where the machining for the flat surface where the seal fits ends. There's about .050" of material too much but it's enough to make the filter get installed crooked. All I had to do was to take a die grinder and remove a bit of material (careful not to touch the seal area but there's more than enough space). It took about 10 minutes and the filter fits great, is much bigger, doesn't cost that much and is easily available and is a renown industrial product (superior than automotive). It's good for 500 hrs on a backhoe so it should fit 10000km on our kj (about 200 hrs). Pretty happy with the result.

Is that an Advanced Efficiency filter? I don't think they are being made in our size yet.

It's not high efficiency but still much better than the oem or most of the other after market crap out there. It contains about 1/2 gallon of oil and it's much better made than a lot of filters I've seen. 2 years ago, we decided to open as many filters as we could to make our own opinion about it. We found out that Mobil 1, k&n, luberfiner, champion, STP were all made at the same place, but for different prices, very well made filters. Fram, mastercraft, defender, all the same junk, not much paper, cheaply made and the bypass is very soft, meaning, you'll never burn an engine but you'll have a lot of crap in it. Purolator were probably some of the best made filter but very hard to get in Canada. At the time I settled for luberfiner (6$ea compare to 20$ for k&N, almost the same thing. ) The hole pattern and the crimp on the filter is patented for each company so if you see the same crimp on 2 brands, it's made at the same place. The cat filter seems really different (plastic tube) and I saw some cut out at the store and they seems really well made. I guess industrial is somewhat different than our automotive crap. The specs are almost the same as our oem. The bypass is a bit softer (7 to 9 psi compare to 8 to 11.) it shouldn't change much.
