Probally from using a better balljoint,if you notice from the pics posted in the thread of the RRO arms they use a cheap brand of balljoints which lower the cost considerably(MOOG aren't cheap).Oh and they have less welds which cost less.

For the same price you can get their HD balljoint or the moog for the same price, your choice. Where can there possibly be less welds, two around the ends for the bushings, and the ones that hold on the plates, which are welded all the way around the same as the 4.5's.

Not only is there not enough weld, but they are cold. it should have been a hotter weld.

Kind of a random question, but doesn't Rubicon Express make UCA's? Are they nice?

Yes, and they are nice, But not for a KJ. You're thinking of their rear lower control arms for TJ's (but work on KJ's).

Oh, hmm. Doesn't sound like a popular mod, changing out rear LCA's. Or maybe it is and I'm oblivious.

It's not. There isn't much to be gained by it.

Ok, I see now how that would work out great. All I can say...good idea!

But having the balljoint stick out is a bit of a downer...

FWIW-I put my 4.5's on in only the last few weeks.
Probably the same vintage as the ones being pictured in this thread.

When talking to Marlin just before install, he told me that he had switched from Moog to Spicer for the ball joints.

He said that the machining was better on the Spicer and that it was the same model as that being used on a number of full size PU's, very heavy duty. Also, you no longer need to install the spacer above the steering knuckle.

Mine are spicer.

In response to the ongoing pictures of the bolt holes - it appears to me that the body of the ball joint itself is being relied upon to be a stressed member of the assembled unit. Many parts for many different machines are also designed this way. The individual pieces and parts can appear to be flimsy, however the stresses on the assembled units are an entirely different creature, and much more difficult to calculate. Further, as far as calculating stresses goes, it's great if you have an engineer on hand (like we do here on this forum), but for the real world "inventor" (aka "backyard mechanic", aka "me"), we tend to simply go for overkill, and trial and error. The more overkill, the safer we feel, and usually are. I have installed a lot of machinery with parts that didn't look very robust, but was excruciatingly engineered, to minimum standards btw, and is still in service years later. Just my 2 cents.

By the way RRO did send the metal sleeve that was missing. RRO gave me no problems at all. I must say that Glenn at RRO is a very stand up guy... Install date has been set for next week Sunday.
