I just installed a new sirius unit with my RB1. It works right out of the used box without any activiation. Yes, it's used from Hoss75 who switched his service to a new unit.

Anyone know what's going on? Will I have to pay at some point?

the hardware number for the Sirius receiver still attached to Hoss's subscription. as long as Hoss doesn't cancel that hardware number, you're gold:)

But he changed hardware units.

He said his replacement unit, also used, was on for a day or so before stopping. Is there a lag in deactivation?

When I closed my Sirius account a coupe of years back, it took a few hours for it to finally deactivate. It sounds like the unit is still on his account. My wife just got me a unit for Christmas. Now that radio seems to be going all talk, I can finally listen to some music.

I have heard rumors that the company broadcasts a deactivation signal that is received by a designated unit. But they only do this for a finite period of time. Your receiver has no means to send a signal of any kind to the satellite. So it cannot say, hey, I'm here still working and need to be shut off.

There was once a rumored way to take advantage of disconnecting a non-primary satellite TV tuner and keeping it disconnected while cancelling service. Upon reconnecting after a certain period, you were supposed to get TV to that receiver box without paying for it. You may well have lifetime free Sirius now.

Well, either way I'm hooked and will be buying units for my wife's car and our home. So they got me!
