Winch Question

What are the pros and cons to getting the different styles of winches? I know that I will be using it quite a bit (lots of stupid kids around here that need pulling :twisted:

) and I'm worried about not being able to find replacement parts. I was looking at Warn winches (M8000 or XD8000I) for the prices. I would rather get a 9500 winch but again prices are a problem with me. Is MileMarker a good company? Can I get replacement parts for them? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Milemarker is a great alternative to Warn/Superwinch/Ramsey. They build a quality winch (only supplier for Hummvee winches to the military). Parts are available through them on their website last I checked. The use a planetary gear drive and everything is super stout. Good Value.

The winches the military uses are hydraulic, made in the USA, high quality units.

The electric winches (civilian) are made in China. Not a knock on the quality, just a fact.

I have always had great luck getting replacement parts for Warn products. Check their website for the definitions/differences between worm and planetary geared winches to help figure out which type you want. The mount you are going to use might also dictate your choice of winch. Your best bet is to save $ until you can a higher capacity unit, like the 9500lb. You'll be glad you did.

the made in america hydro winches are available in the recreational market, same as the military...
is Warn, SuperWinch, and Ramsey made in the USA and a better product? I kind of doubt it. Warn has some neat features like the thermometrics but if you know how to use a winch you can avoid needing this by running within the manufacturer's guidelines (running for 10 seconds-then letting it cool off, use a pulley or snatch block).

No electric winch is really water-proof. I have yet to see an eletric winch used under water. If you are worried about splashing through water or rain-thats different. According to a customer service rep from Rough Country, a puddle or rain or mud hole wont wreck the winch but operation under water will.

I never said it was a better product. Just that the electric winches are made in China.

T-Max winches are submergible.

I was asking about submergablility. I dont plan on using a winch underwater. If I am in that situation, I have bigger problems than if the winch can work underwater (Tranny sucking up water!). Is Tmax as dependable as Warn?

I say if you get stuck a lot and you drive offroad alone then get a winch, electric or hydraulic if you want to get unstuck some times. Or get a manual winch (hi-lift jack, power pull, Tirfor or a combination) and a shovel to get allways get unstuck.

a jeep should come factory equipped with a hi-lift/tow hooks/e-tool (collapsible shovel used by the military, $5-$15 at most surplus stores)

What IS the 'fast linespeed' ?? How many feet / minute? i.e. How many horsepower (or watts) is the motor?? That's what really counts. My electric toothbrush can pull 9,000 lbs. - if it's geared low enough !

They're hydraulic-I have used them and broken one (the fitting on the power steering pump wasn't properly installed). If they come with a winch from the factory on a civilian H1 they are electric.

The older ones I worked on in Saudi Arabia and Korea were 24v electric.

I think the newer armored ones may be hydraulic........the darn things weigh 10,000 lbs.

All of the MM Winches I have seen on all of my HMMWVS have been electric. Basically a 24 volt version of the civilian model right down to the control remote.

As for the harbor freight winch, I looked at it yesterday at the store, and it looks like it may use a lot of the same parts as the MM, It even look real similar to mine. on the surface the only things I saw different were the cable gaurds on the top looked cheap and flimsy, and the screws were far inferior to the ones used on my MM., but as I said, the case looks the same, who knows about the workings on the inside though.

The one I used wasn't armored but it did have hydraulic milemarker-maybe its just a recent thing, if have worked on a hmmwv then you know how the government is...replace a good part with a more complex supposedly better part. I like how you can't overheat the winch but having all of that plumbing just worries me...Then again they need a winch that can be used by anyone without fear of being destroyed because some son of a female dog forgot to read the field manual.

USAFCOP-that price on the Harbor Freight looks similar to the price of a milemarker-I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if it was the same winch under a different name. They both use a three stage planetary gear set. I would have to look at the specs on each but like I said I wouldn't be surprised...

EDIT: grnd93-I am not sure how old the HMMWV was but I used it this past summer so it could have been fairly new...When I was with my reserve unit they did a lot of driving stuff at the annual training (AT) and part of it was proper handling off road including the use of a winch...sweet training everybody on this forum should get.
