Announcing 68037142AA. This is the Mopar kit for the 2008+ (export only) JK (Wrangler) CRD torque converter, now available as a service part for the NAFTA 2005-2006 KJ CRD. This torque converter differs from the previous KJ CRD parts by having a stiffer spring rate in the lockup torsion damper. This stiffer spring rate was chosen for durability reasons due to the increased torque of the newer VM 2.8L engine.

This converter is more than sufficient for 340 lbf-ft.

I haven’t installed one in mine yet, but this is the path I’ll take. It should to be a much lower cost alternative to the Suncoast. Looks like the price currently is $286.

Expect the same stall speeds, possibly more vibration when the torque converter is locked up (due to the stiffer springs). It does not have a billet carved front cover, it does not have a CNC machined Aluminum stator. But if it works for the JK/J8, it should work for me.

The kit consists of the torque converter and four driveplate bolts.

Should be available soon wherever Mopar parts are sold. I'm going to wait a week and call my local stealership.

Interesting. A lower stall speed is something which pushed many people toward the Suncoast. Is the new Mopar part more of a durability upgrade, while keeping the factory driving characteristics?

No intent to rain on anybody's parade, here, Danoid, but what would be your reasoning behind this upgrade - noone has had any failures with the stock TC since the 11\05 upgrade, so if lower stall is not your goal, why go thru the hassel of R&R'ing the drivetrain?

Guyz, this may be a nieve question so I will give my standard apology in advance.

Lets say a vehicle puts out 300# torque at 1800 rpms.

I'm in cruise control on flat land and the engine is running at 1800 rpms. Does that mean the engine is "sending" 300# of torque to the converter?

Or does the drive train need to be under a heavy load for the TC to "receive" 300# of torque.

The JK converter is designed to handle more torque in lockup - the engine was rated at 460Nm, but tested to over 500. This means that you can accelerate faster without the shudder.

If you read back in some posts, you'll note that GDE mentioned that they carved out the accel pedal map so that you don't get shudder in the low-RPMs. With this converter, you could have a large percentage more torque in that region which greatly improves the vehicle driveability and smile-factor. With that ability, you would alleviate a lot of downshifting while towing, downshifting while passing, etc. You can also run more lockup and even partial lockup with the new converter, so when someone is able to create a better trans cal, there is now hardware that can compliment it.

Think Suncoast with better results (the shudder's actually gone since it didn't solve it for everyone) but for less than half the price.

So then, with this modification, what it boils down to is TCM control to get better performance?

Your engine generates the torque. You are not generating that torque unless you are giving the engine maximum fuel and air, so under cruise you are producing just enough torque to maintain your speed.

Just got off the phone with the dealer and they are wanting to replace my tc. Is 68037142AA what I should have installed???

I don't think it needs one, I took it in for TSB 21-015-05, but that is another issue.

I just got back in from the dealer, and it appears that I am getting one these new tc's. I was in a hurry to get back to work, and did not write the p/n down, but it did start with a 6 and end with aa, and from what I can tell it must be the new one.

As for TSB 21-015-05, the problem was that after the Jeep sits for a few hours, if you start it up and put it right into drive, it will barely move. The reman transmission that was installed last winter must have had the old filter in it. The parts guy said both filters were on order.

Since I am going to get the new TQ for free, Chrysler warranty, no since in complaining that I am unneeded parts, they are also replacing the valve body.

Has the F37 "recall" been performed on that vehicle? If it has not, there are probably more than a few folks on this forum and elsewhere that would love to swap TCM's with you before you get that done.

and, if the F37 was done, is the dealer offering to replace the tc for free?

F37 was done before I bought it, and the 3rd tc went it her last winter. The reason it is free is that I have an extened warranty, so it is $50 if they replace the tc, valve body, and filters or just the filters.

If Mopar coded it correctly, 68037142AA should be the only torque converter available for the 2.8L.

click23 if you are getting a pile of parts on Chrysler's dime ask for the pump also.

mine was 68000336aa. The first one they put in shuttered on the test drive accordding to the tech. So in went a second one. I am not sure they are fixing the correct thing anyway. I thouht a trans shutter happens under at least some load on the engine and trans. What I have been complaining about is a miss,chug,stutter,or shudder after an acceleration (light or hard) and let off the pedal to get a steady cruise or very light deceleration. The darn thing starts doing it, but intermittitly. :evil: It always knows when a tech is riding in it, in 3 years only one tech has felt it for a couple seconds. He thought it was the trans and replaced the trans filters at 9000 miles. Claiming there was a tsb for it. :?:

That particular shudder is eliminated by the GDE tune. It turns on and off like a switch between the OEM and GDE calibration in my vehicle.
