I found a 98 Wrangler for sale on a quiet back road not too far from me. Has I6, auto, 4WD, and is lifted. seller say it has a shimmy in the front tires but i can deal with that. He's asking $6500. Is this a rip off, fair price, or steal? I need another month to get the last couple dollars i need to buy it.

Mileage?
Hard top or soft?
Condition?
Options? D44 or D35?
Pics?
kind of lift? tires/wheels, etc?

The older ones have dropped in value since the JK has gotten so popular. Being lifted doesn't mean it is worth more and often, Unless it is Really built very well, it can detract form the value....especially if they already know there is a problem like a "shimmy". Make sure the track bar is Ok as that is a common problem over 2" or so of lift.

fwiw, I stole my sons 99 w/ 4.0L, auto, hard top, upgraded sound, Very Mint interior, Never wheeled, 129K miles, for $3200....like I said, Stole it. It had very minor cosmetic damage to right front flare and fender and bent lower ctrl arm bracket, also fairly easily fixed. Other than that, it was in very good condition and I'm sure we could have gotten $5500+ for it w/out even trying after fixing those minor things.

I bought my 97 in Feb. & paid $4,000, with a 4" lift & 33's & a hard top BUT it had 150,000 miles on it BUT was just up from FL. so NO RUST

for about $500 excluding tires you can upgrade the front end, aftermarket HD track bar, & a complete currie tie rod set up ( drag link & tie rod ) + labor unless you do it yourself then just an alignment

if you can have it looked at before purchase do it, right off the bat I spent 3,400 on mine fixing stuff & tires & it's been a continueing saga ever since but it is drivable now though & passed state inspection

yep a 30 & 35 with 3.07's

I'll tell you right now with the 3.07's you'll HATE THEM if there still in there, running those tires

I have 33's with 3.07's & it can't get out of it's own way, wheelin seems ok but I'm going differant gears come x-mas...can't stand it

I agree with racinfan. If that is still the stock ratio in those diffs, you'll hate it. I drove on 35's with 3.73 (stock on my LJ) for a year before I re-geared. It was an absolute dog, especially on the highway. Now I have 4.56 and I still wish I had gone deeper, because the overdrive still kicks in way too early.( not that you'd have that problem-the 42rle didn't end up in Wranglers until 2003) Some people would say that if it is a stick shift, it could be livable with that ratio, just that you would lose fifth gear and probably start in second all the time. Is it stick or auto?

which means it's a 3 spd with NO overdrive, same as mine...yep your gonna hate it if thier still in there, BUT that can be changed & from what I've been told from my shop with an auto they only recomend going to 4.11's don't know the reason behind it all something with the AUTO tranny but I trust thier word

I'm not buying a muscle car guys. If I wanted to i'd put a fat down payment on a Challenger SRT8. I'm looking at this as a weekend, pine barrens trail rig. The Libby will still be my daily driver. :) We have trash trucks here at OTC that are in such bad shape turtles outrun them. so this won't bother me one bit.
