OK, looks like it is back to the drawing board so I can redesign the bumper this week. I'll have to find an 02-04 with ABS, and an 05-06 with and without ABS, and a CRD to see what can/needs to be done with the washer bottle. Thanks for your input guys. You all are designing the bumper, I'm just doing all the work.:D

I have a question that I'm not sure if it's been addressed. When you say that these bumpers will have better approach and departure angles, are the bottoms of the bumpers higher off the ground than the stock bumper? The reason I ask is that here in Maryland, the limit for lifts is determined by a measurement to the bumper. I have seen some full size trucks with big lifts on them, but they actually drop the rear bumper a few inches just to stay "legal". I'm hoping I'll be able to put a larger lift (Superlift or SFA) by next year and don't want to risk going too high with the bumper to be ticketed. I'm still interested in the rear bumper though as I don't trust hanging a bigger spare on the rear gate.

David, that is the same here. There are 2 catches to this law.
1: They measure from the LOWEST point of the bumper (put a Hella or even bolt a small steel bracket to the bottom of the bumper).

2. They also have to measure from the frame rails. On my KJ, the frame rails measure 14" to the ground. Again, a light or some form of lowered object can get you past this law.

RL: Mine is an `04 with 4-wheel ABS and since I live only about 60 miles away............unless one of the other guys down in the Springs or Castle Rock has ABS also and can visit you.

I could take detailed pics and email them to you also.

If you wouldn't mind snapping a few pictures down on the areas around the air box. Particularly the fender wall on the passenger side and between the radiator and the airbox. I looked at Teds KJ just a little while ago, and he has a PCM or something mounted to the fender wall where that sample relocated washer bottle was bolted, but there is plenty of room between the radiator and airbox.

Rock Lizard - I'm not sure if the LOST Rockies have finalized any dates for the Wrenchathon take two or not, but if so, and you plan to be there, I can give you a CRD to look at for the washer bottle placement or relocation possibilities. I'm in the Loveland area, but would come down south this weekend if you wanted to take a look and some measurements.

Washington has a similar law, I had a '75 F-100, with a monster lift... Bumper was 48" above the pavement...

My Dad and I made a removeable piece that hung down to the legal limit.

It was a simple design like the drop down part of an 18 wheeler trailer that pinned on with hitch pins.

I'll have to get over to the Rockies board to check the new dates when they become available to be sure if I can attend, but if you plan to go anyways, then sure, I'll take a peek, but don't make a special long trip just for me to look under your hood. I can always snag one at the dealership for a "test drive".:D

Unless the MD law is absolutely ridiculous there's no way this is even going to be a factor with the lifts currently available for a KJ. A stock F-250's bumper height is going to be higher than a KJ with even 4 inches of lift.

My understanding is that the limit is 28". I think my measurement after installing my lift was 18or 19". So with another 3 inches of lift ( if I go SFA)and maybe 2 inches for larger tires, it will be kinda close to the limit, especially if the bumper cuts out a couple inches to improve the departure angle.

Yeah here in minnesota the law is 24 inches. I come in at 23.5 inches. Here it is 24 inches regardless of GVWR...

In maryland you are allowed 28 inches ...so with a lift you are still legal.

I have yet to see a lift kit where it lowered the bumper. Are you sure that you didn't see a body lift kit? Designing a kit that relocates a bumper opens you up to a lot of liability in the case of an accident. Most companies won't take that chance (why do you think they don't include these brackets with body lifts?). My bumpers are level with my buddy's 3/4 Suburban... If the vehicle has a higher GVWR, they get more legal height.

I have no idea what the law is here in Cali, but the bumper on my ZJ is maybe 3 feet up or so and I've never been bothered.

If it is 27" from frame to ground then they are not enforcing it at all in Ca. There are Many large trucks running around here on at least 37-40+" tires and Huge lifts. You know, those rediculous rigs that couldn't wheel a trail unless it was 40' wide and they have a minimum of 8-10 but usually more shocks underneath.

For reference;
Transmission skid; $99 USPS
Poison Spyder Rock Ring; $134 UPS
Rocky Road Diff Guard; $60 DHL

So my bet is, for a whole bumper, a load of cash.
If we could get a few items together in a bulk order, stick them in a crate and send them by boat it would be cheaper. Take longer though!
