Wife: "There's a big cable dragging behind the Jeep."
Me: "A what?!"
Wife: "Some big cable. I meant to tell you about it the other day."
Me: Ah *#*! - as I ran out to inspect the damage while recalling the last time she said something like that after 2 days of driving her Subaru with the oil light on.

----------

The "cable" turned out to be a black tube about 1 1/2 feet long dangling from the top of the passenger side of the tranny. It has a little white fitting on the end but I've never seen a fitting like that before so cannot tell what the fitting would fit to. I searched everywhere and . . . nothing. My best guess is that it is a vent tube of some sort but I can't find anywhere it may have been tied and I don't know why it would be 1 1/2' long - unless it was meant to plug into something on another part of the tranny.
No shifting issues, dripping oil etc.. so I just tucked it back up out of the way.
The only other clue is another black tube on the other side of the tranny way up near the top. I can barely see it but I notice it has a tiny red cap on a white end fitting and if I tap it with a stick, the cap is lose. I assume this is a vent tube and the cap is to protect if from road debris - so surmised the other tube's end fitting was actually the same one only shaved down from being dragged along the road.

Ideas?

- C

That vent is supposed to be up high so no water gets in the trans when the Jeep goes through a puddle. That's why it's so long.

It sounds like the transfer case breather tube. Assuming you have the auto transmission which has a very short breather tube that sits on top of the transmission and is uncapable of dangling. The transfer case tube normally terminates up near the transmission tube and is held by a plastic tube clamp or tie. They are both capped by a vent cap (in many cases a white plastic insert into the end of the hose).

Aha .. . that must be it.
So, it looks like she may have gotten off easy this time; new cap, and some zip ties.

Thanks!

Welcome back, I wondered if you were still driving a CRD. It's good to see your luck turning - you ended up with an easy one this time. :D
