My Rene is coming up on 60,000 miles. I checked with a Jeep dealer and their 60K service will cost like $550 or something. No way am I paying that.

Can anyone tell me what is really needed at 60K miles (for a manual 5speed Lib) and what I shouldn't bother with? Obviously, I can do most of this stuff myself like the oil change and filters. Just want to know what's important that I will need to pay someone to do. Thanks.

Here's what's included in Jeeps 60K service:

Oil & filter change
rotate tires
brake service (clean, adjust, inspect)
Tune up
PCV Valve
Air filter.
fuel injection cleaning
Transfer case service
front & rear axle service
transmission service (flush and fill)

Here's my thoughts.

Oil & filter change - Depends when your oil was changed last. 3000-5000 miles for conventional oil.......synthetics can go alot longer.
rotate tires - Recommended every 3000 miles to maximze tire life
brake service (clean, adjust, inspect) - Inspect at a minimum, unless you've looked at them recently.
Tune up - If it's never been done might be a good idea
PCV Valve - Cheap to buy, why not?
Air filter. - Only if it's dirty
fuel injection cleaning - Run some in the tank stuff every so often
Transfer case service - Check the fluid
front & rear axle service - Same as above
transmission service (flush and fill) - Not bad advice, but if your fluid isn't burnt you're probably ok.

Bottom line is most of the stuff they are going to do should probably be done anyway. You can do everything yourself for alot less money if you have the time. Some of it I would leave to the pros (brake inspection, tranny flush) just because they have the equipment and training to do it right.

If you can't do anything...at the very least do an oil change, tire rotation, and have your brakes inspected....those are the most important. :wink:

Axle service-I changed my axles at 12k to put syn in them. I wont do it again until 30k then again at 60k so i would do that, not a bad idea to use 75w-140 syn.

Tranny- Your tranny is a manual, I dont know much about those. Can you even get a flush? Its not like they have a torque or anything. If it wasnt changed at 30k i would go ahead and drain it and refill. No biggie. I dont even know what kind of fluid it get either, i would get it at the dealer though.

Fuel injection- Good can of stp will clean those.

Everything else is easy do it yourself stuff.

Thanks for the tips. I can certainly do the oil change, pcv, air filter, tire rotation, and spark plugs myself.

As far as the transfer case and axle service is concerned, how do I check the fluid? and should they be serviced at a particular interval or don't bother unless the fluid is low?

fuel injection service ... don't do unless there are symptoms????

transmission service ... I have a 5 speed manual, do I still need to get it serviced?

Any other service I need?? Is differential service part of the axle and/or transfer case service by the way?

If you've never run an in-the-tank injector cleaner you may benefit from a good injector cleaning.


You can check the level of your t-case and tranny by pulling the fill plug. The fluid level should be no more than 1/2 inch below the plug. Same for the differentials. I'm not sure of the intervals for a fluid change in a manual trans, but youur owner's manual should say.

Before you do anything get a factory service manual, or at the minimum a Chilton, or Haynes manual. They will give you alot of information you need, including the location of the fill plugs. I'm not sure about the KJ, but I know on some transmissions if you remove the wrong plug you will mess up the linkage, so you want to be sure you have the right one.

I to have a 5-speed man renny, but mine is comming up on 50K I just had all my fluids changed. Both front and rear diffs, transfer, and tranny. What exactly do they mean when it says "Tune-up" if it mean that they are going to make it run like new and be perfect then sign me up!!

Where is Queenstown MD at. If you are close to the WV line I will be more than happy to give you a hand on doing 90% of that $500 + service. Just let me know. Heck if you have a garage and some basic tools I will come up to help you.

I appreciate the offer, but Queenstown is located on the eastern shore of MD. I'm about 15 miles east of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.

I forgot about the tcase, theres just two screws, one drain and one fill, very easy. I would say at 60k the tranny needs to be changed. I do the injector cleaner at least every winter.
